Memory card for storing GPS map data on X51v

I just ordered a X51v and want to use it with a TomTom navigator 5 wireless GPS receiver. From the spec of X51v, it says there are two card slots, one for CompactFlash Type II Card, another for Secure Digital / SDIO Now / MMC Memory Card. I don't have any experiences with those cards. Can anyone advise what memory card (1 GB) I should use for storing GPS map data? And what the speed of the card should be? Thanks.

Typically, users use an SD card to store data on and leave the CF slot available for interface cards. You can use either now since there are both CF and SD based GPS interfaces. If you plan on using a Bluetooth GPS, you can use either slot to store your map data.
SD cards transfer data in 4 bit nibbles and CF cards store data 8 bits (1 byte) at a time. As for actual storage speed, that has to be tested on the cards you get as each card has different speeds. The Axim does have a maximum write speed to the cards though so don't waste money on a 180X card when a 30X will do.
I have both a 1GB SD and CF card in my Axim.

Thank you, bigbop! I'll start from 1 GB SD.

I didn't catch $40 for 1 GB SD at Bestbuy on black Friday. Circuitcity has a $60 (after $20 mail in rebate) deal. Anyone knows better deals, please let me know. Thanks.

On SuperMediaStore.com, there is a PQI 1gb SD 133x (for $66) and a 150x (for $70). I'm looking to replace my current SD card because I run OnCourse Navigator 5 and I experience significant lag times when accessing maps. What is the maximum SD card speed that the x50v will recognize?

www.newegg.com

Some of the best pricing on flash media and dirt cheap shipping. If you can live without the media right now, do so. The holiday demand has driven costs up 20% plus and supply on the quality media is drying up. After the holidays it should return to sanity. For example, pre-holiday you could get a 2Gb A-Data Turbo 150x SD for ~$100 to the door, but now expect to pay ~$140 to the door! If you are using a high-speed card reader with your PC to load the cards, you'll want higher speed cards. You don't regularly find these in the retail electronics stores but will find them in retail camera shops.
