A guide to fitting sync cable into axim w/ case

Hey guys. After putting my axim into the silicone skin case, and realizing that it doesnt fit in the cable, a lightbulb lit up in my head. I looked at it, and said, "I am definately not taking my Ax out of the case every time I need to sync." So, I took the cradle and looked at it. In less than 1 minute later, I had a charger/sync cable, without that big cradle that would fit in that little hole that silicone skin case leaves.

Here is how to do it...

What you need:
1. A small philips and flat head screw driver.
2. An Axim Cradle that your Axim in a case wont fit into.

Unplug the power cable from the cord ( you dont have to unplug USB, might make it easier if you dont )

Turn over the cradle, and take your flat head screwdriver and start trying to pry off those circular rubber things.

Once the rubber things are off, you will find that little screws are under these. Unscrew all of these with your little philips screwdriver and pull. I didnt realize this, but the bottom is this big metal thing.

Anyway, once you do this, pull out the connector part, and you will see in the back where the power line comes in. There is a release type button under the black and red wires. Push or pull it ( I dont remember which, but you will know ) and the wires will pop out.

You're done, now just plug in power cable. You may be upset about the fact thatyou cant stand it up anymore, but I dont really mind . I have had these two bottles on my desk for years, so I finally have a use for them ( for some reason I can never bring myself to throw them out. One of them still has some gatorade in it )

Everyone probably knew how to do this, but I just saw this as a chance to contribute. I hope this helps some people, because I have seen people on the internet ( here, and in other forums ) complain about cases that dont fit in the cradle, so this is universal )

Seems a little excessive to me would it not be less trouble to remove the case.

in some cases, it is a LOT more trouble to remove it every single time ...

What I'd like to know is if the other battery slot can still be used in such a state - if so, methinks that this mod is a go ;)

it IS a little excessive !!!

if it was me .. I would just use a sharp blade and make the bottom SQUARE access of the case a little bit bigger ;)

silicone of not that hard to cut !!! :) man !!! I can't believed you disected your cradle like that !! :D

and for the fact that you cannot stand it up anymore ... wouldn't syncing through the USB SYNC cable be the same without all that trouble ??

Also, like I said, if you have a couple things behind it, standing it up isnt a problem. And for some cases, taking it out might not be a problem. But I have a silicone skin case. Think of it as wearing a weatsuit (my case) and sweatpants (yours) You wouldnt want to have to change every time :)

I actually think this is a good idea. I bet some creative people will see this and run with it. I have seen so many versions of homemade battery chargers/docking stations/headphone contraptions that I could easily see someone taking this base unit and creating a really nice cradle that would fit any known case.

I have also seen someone here at aximsite that did some alterations to the cradle to open up seat to allow their case to fit.

Let's applaud ingenuity and not knock it down. If we all did that we would never even have our ax's to begin with.

Well, thank you very much for your support. Actually, to everyone, the only reason why I didnt want to open the seat with a knife, is because I didnt want to destroy the cradle, if I ever wanted to sell it. I know I wouldnt want to buy a used product where the cradle is deformed.

As another alternative, you can pick up a Bluetooth router for your PC/laptop, and then you don't have to use the dock at all. I just leave mine sitting on my desk (plugged in), and when I'm off to a meeting or something I just unplug and go.

View MyPDA for a few photographs of a couple of my own do-it-yourself projects. I had to disassemble my Axim's cradle, as well (to resolder the connector). I don't have a case or extended battery, but it did occur to me that I could devise a landscape dock/stand.

They may not be nearly as much as you think. I picked up a Zonet for about $25 (including shipping), and the prices are down a bit if you throw in the mail-in rebate.

There's also one for just $10 plus shipping ... not sure I'd trust it with a 3-star review, but I can say that NewEgg has one heck of a return policy.

FYI - removing the circuit board and doing it like this will not only void your warranty, but you also risk the possibility of ripping the connector right off of the circuit board.

I had to return a dock some time ago because the connector worked itself off of the circuit board...and this was with it still in the dock.

removing it from the dock means it no longer has anything to hold it on--besides 2 very small solder points.

Way too risky.

I respect my $$$ too, but you have to assume that the total cost to buy something is the price for the basic device PLUS whatever else you need to make it functional for you. Your situation sounds like the guy who can afford to go out to a restaurant to eat, but he can't afford to leave a tip.
