I've never used either (I had a hard plastic case for my IPAQ), but I'd like to get a new case for my X50v. My personal inclination is an aluminum case like the PDAir off of Aximcase. My first choice was the Magnum case, but I'm getting an extended battery for it, and they don't make an extended version. I just wanted to know if I was giving up anything going with the aluminum vs. the leather. I know that some of the leather ones can be used with the cradle, which would be kind of nice... My IPAQ could. But it didn't have a VGA display, 196MB of memory, WiFi, BT, or anything else fun. :)
IMO the aluminum case will give better protection. The leather case is easier to hold and looks better.I went for protection with the PDair extended case for my X30.
I used to have leather for my Palms, but with my X50v, I opted for a RhinoSkin, then the PDAir Aluminum cases (the latter was the first to put out a hard case for extended battery). These cases are great protection, but have flimsy belt clips!
socpsy, are the belt-clips on one of the aluminum ones better than the other? Why did you get the PDAir one as well as the Rhinoskin? Did you get the black, or basic aluminum one? Just wondering about the cosmetics of the black...
To sum it up
Leather = looks, screen protection, (some cradle capable), scratch protection, thin, light, and a nice warm texture (at least my Sena case is :) )
Metal = scratch proof, drop protection, heavier, tougher, cold in the winter, able to drop in backpack and not worry about it
I used to have a leather case with my prior PPC, but with my ax - I wanted protection - after all the x50v is the PPC I always wanted! So I got a rino (metal) case. Its been great! To issues, not scratches, no worries.
Leather still looks the best, but I take may ax with me 90% of the time, so I need pertection.
ALthough I love the looks of some of the leather cases and the ability to cradle without taking the case off, I can't forego the protection the Rhinoskin gives my x50v. My PPC is too much of an investment in money, time, and data to let something happen to it. Now, if complete care was available in Florida I may have slightly different attitude. With insurance like that I could afford to not be paraniod about scratches and drops. Also, I use the belt clip with my Rhinoskin and have never had a problem. It's secure and workes great.

I think either one will work. The Axim x50v is a tough piece of technology. I dropped mine from 3 stories up...WITHOUT a case and all that it received was a small scratch by the stylus hole. If you keep it mainly in a pocket, leather would be fine.

At that time, RhinoSkin did not have a case for the extended battery, which I bought a few months after I bought my Axim. Since I wanted an aluminum case, I bought the first hard case that accommodated the extended battery (which happened to be PDAir). Since I can use the PDAir with either standard or extended battery, I sold my RS aluminum. Mine were all the aluminum color.
I don't know about much difference there is between the clips. My RS clip broke within a few days. I decided not to use the belt clip for the PDAir because it looked a lot like the RS clip.
Shucks... Why limit yourself? I have one of each! One for work and otherwise more active enviorments and the leather for casual wear.
I spent a lot of money on this thing, I want to enjoy it!
