Weight - Axim x51V + Rhinoskin Aluminum Hardcase
Could anybody tell me how much do Axim x51V + Rhinoskin Aluminum Hardcase(non-extended battery version) weight? I am currently doing research to see if the Axim x51v fits my need.
I want to take my PDA everywhere so that I can get into a habit of using it and make my life more organized, however, I want to protect it with a good case. Is the Rhinoskin Aluminum Hardcase heavy? Would both of them combined be heavier than a man's wallet(I know it is hard to judge). I went to my local Dell store to look at the Axim x51v, however, they don't have any accessories on display.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I actually have that setup, and I have to say I love it. The case is reasonably light, not any heavier than a pack of cigs. I love the case. When it is closed, it holds the pda securely. open, you have the possibility of it coming out of the top though. It also comes with a nice belt clip, which I use. Good heavy plastic clip. One thing I do not like is that the pin that keeps the cover and base together sometimes slips loose, and you have to push it back in. Nothing that will fall out and lose, but watch it. The titanium is nice and cleans off well, the case has a neoprene inside and is soft on your pda. It also has two spaces to held sd cards in the lid, whih is really nice. the case has openings on the bootom for your sync cable, and opening son the side for the lock, wifi and record button. Just enough of the top is exposed to access the headphone jack, cf slot and your stylus with no problems. two holes in the front for the mic and wifi/bt light. Highly reccommend for active people. I have several dents on the front that would have put my x50v in KIA status.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. So, how is the Axim x51v stay secured inside the case? Or is it just kinda snug inside the case? Did it ever fall out of your case before?
Also, how thick is it? If I put it inside my pants pocket, is it going to stick out like a FAT wallet?
Thanks

Snug in the case. there is the neoprene in the case, as well as several rubber bumpers inside that hold it fairly well. when the case is open though, you are at risk of it falling out the top. closed it is secure.
You may want another case if you want to keep it in your pocket, not so bad if you have really baggy pants, but the weight is noticeable. non baggy pants are a nono, you may get some wierd looks. use the belt clip, embrace your inner geek.
roughly 1 inch thick, only a mm or two taller than the pda.

I have an x50v and a rhinoskin which is basically the same thing. I have to say that I absolutely love this setup. The case doesn't add that much weight at all. I feel like my pda is completely protected which is very important.

Thanks again. I already carry a phone on my belt. I don't want to hang another thing on my belt ;)
Is it really that thick? Is it because of the plastic belt clip? Any other hardcase that you would recommend?

Do you put it inside your pants pocket(non baggy pants)...more like docker? Does it stick out a lot?

Well, I wear dress pants (non baggy) to work every day and I mean you can tell it's there if you really look for it but it isn't just overly obvious no. But, as with anything in your pocket, you can kinda tell it's there. But, to answer your question, it doesn't stick out that much.

Be very careful if you put your PDA into your pants pocket. Most of the cases do not cover the sync connector. You don't want to have any loose coins in the same pocket as the PDA as there is a chance that they might get stuck in the sync connector and do some damage. In fact, I've been using my trusty Treo 90 for the last 3 years, plaing it into my pants pocket all the time. I've noticed in the past 6 months that lint and other dirt in my pocket has been slowly working its way into the sync connector and I've had to clean it out several times to get the unit to sync.
With my first aluminum case for my X50, I placed a small piece of plastic at the end to cover the sync connetor and protect it. I wonder why case manufacturers don't make some kind of a spring loaded flap to cover the end. Even my Sharp Zaurus PDA had a small built-in cover for its connector.

bigbop, thank you very much for your advice. I don't have coin and stuff in my pocket if I put any expensive gadget inside my pocket. However, lint is a concern. Thanks for the tips.
Haha, I still have my Zaurus 5500! It is at a point that I need something better. I am going to sell mine on eBay. Do you still have yours?

Yes, I use it for doing WiFi site surveys.
I purchased the RhinoSkin case for the extended battery and I will be keeping it in my old Compaq belt pouch - it fits perfectly and protects the top and bottom openings on the case.

I too have the X50v and Al Rhinoskin. I usually keep it in my shirt pocket. The only problem which I had is that it is so smooth that it can slide out when you bend over. I found that double-sided scotch tape and a tennis grip material called H2Over Grip by Wilson keeps it in-place. This may also help in other low grip situations you may encounter. Photo [if I do it right]:
So far the tape has held from mid August until the end of December.

Just as an fyi, an X51v,with the regular plain battery in the Rhinoskin case (with SD card but no belt clip stud installed) weighs 242 grams (or about 8.5 ounces which is just over 1/2 a pound). The Axim alone is 170 grams and the case is ~72g.
I was surprised when I weighed it, since I didn't think it was that heavy and don't really notice it in my front pocket, of course, I was used to having a Palm 3xe there before...
Edit: I borrowed my girlfriends Ipaq last night (w/ no case) and was surprised at how light it felt, but like I mentioned above, I don't notice my Axim and case in my jeans pockets. I just slides right in and stays there and I hardly notice it. The aluminum case(or aluminium case for those of you across the pond) seems much more secure than just the flip cover of my old Palm...
