Battery Extender Confusion!?
I read many posts regarding this same question that has been beaten to death already. so one more time will not hurt!?

I am seeking a battery extender that will allow me to watch movies and listen to music and everything else for 4 hours I am hoping for. If it charges the internal battery at the same time that is a plus.

However from reading the posts I have read.

the ones sold on ebay some of them work and some of them do not.

the ones that do work allows the user to watch movies and such, however there is a flicking of the screen and blinking lights.

some run hot during recharging.

basically reading lots of things that do not make it easy on figuring out which battery extender to buy and from where and with what batteries to use in it.

I am asking those with x50v Windows 2003 SE to help me choose one that allows me to watch movies and maybe recharge the internal one at the same time. something slim and not too bluky and maybe comes with a plugin. so this way i dont have to use the dell adapter or a usb adapter which makes for more wires and more crap.

thanks to all.

This is what I gather from my personal experience and from reading all the threads.

use high amperage NiMH AA batteries (2500 mAh)
use with the Axim at full charge
control the screen flicker by matching the brightness for battery power to external power.
charge the AA's frequently to maintain a high charge. I found that even with what seemed to be a good charge on the AA's, it wasn't enough for the axim

I have the x50v & OS2003se, i got the 4 battery (AA) extender, from boxwave but i really don't think it makes a difference which one you get.
The thing is that you need to run it with NiMH rechargables (preferabbly the 2500mAH), and not regular alkayline type, the normal ones cannot supply enough current at the proper voltage and hense that is why you get the flickering if you try regular AAs.
It is preferrable that your batteries (AAs & x50 internal) are fully charged since most chargers & cables will supply voltage to the recharge pin (for recharging the internal battery) plus the normal power pin (used for external power connections). Obviously it would be nice to see a switch on the charger /cable that would let you turn off the connections to the charging pin but I haven't seen any like that.
So if your internal battery is low you will be sucking current to charge the internal battery plus power the x50 to watch your movie which could be up to about 1A, needless to say that is heavy demand for AA's even the 2500mAH.
If you are trying to recharge & play movies then things will run hot since you are draining the batteries at a high rate which always causes heat - but it shouldn't be too hot.

If you do this a lot you might be better off getting one of those mugen 3000mAH extended batteries - that and the battery extendedrs should see you through 1 or 2 movies easily.

I use the 7700 mAh external power pack, from Socket Communications ( http://www.socketcom.com/product/AC4009-614.asp ) (along with a Dell 2200mAh battery).

I get ~4 40 minute TV shows on the 2200mAh battery, and ~13 40 minute TV shows on the external battery. So, if you're looking for more than 11 straight hours of video, it's the way to go.

I've considered that battery pack but it's expensive.

ok let me get this right so my confusion is all sorted out.

The internal battery must be fully charge in order for the unit to suck the battery from the extender, because if its not the internal battery will suck it from the extender as well as power itself from it resulting in a flickering of the screen right. However if it does this I can set the screen brightness accordingly so it does not do this right?

If the external battery has enough power (exceeding 1 AH available) then it won't matter how depleted your internal battery is, no flivkering. If the available power is less, it's a crap shoot as to where and how it will work.

I bought a Sony PSP a few months ago. I noticed that the round part of the power plug is the same as the Axim. I put the big tip on, plugged it in my Axim and it worked. There is a battery extender for the PSP for 20 dollars and it works about the same as the ones you buy. Described like the response above. I haven't had any problems doing this. Has anyone else been using the PSP charger and battery extender?

I bought the Battery extender from here: $6.99 + $2.00 shipping
http://store.yahoo.com/semsons-inc/pdabatexpocp.html
Using 4 2000 mah batteries (cheapest you can buy at Walmart)
It is now charging for the first time, will let you know how it works out tomorrow afternoon.

This is the correct answer. But I have read that if you put one fully charged 2500 mAh NiMH battery in with the alkailnes that will work. I never tried it though. I got such great results with 4 fully charged 2500 mAh NiMH batteries I bought from Walgreens and the cheapest battery extender I could find online I never bothered to try it.

HTH
