Tri Band GSM/GPRS Compact Flash Card

I have a Dell Axim x50v.
Purchased it when it was first out.
I am running 2003 OS on it.

I purchased the G1 Tri Band GSM/GPRS Compact Flash Card recently.
Plugged in my T-Mobile SIM Card. Loaded the software.
I can make and receive calls fine using the corded hands free provided.
I also like not having to carry my phone anymore.

What I need help with.
I have the regular battery that ships with the Axim. It runs out fast.
As it has to be always on for the phone to work.
Any suggestions?

Been reading the discussions on how BT headphones work with x50v and not x51.
I would like to purchase a BT headphone + headset all in one.
Any recomendations?

I am not too thrilled with the software that was shipped with the card.
Currently looking for other alternatives.
Any ideas? :

Overall it is a little bulky, but it beats carrying an axim, a phone and a MP3 player.
Planning on buying a 2GB SD card as CF slot is now taken.

Thx

vramabadran

PS
I now have a Blackberry 7100 and 10GB IPOD for sale

Welcome to Aximsite, vramabadran!

As for your battery issue, the only practical thing would be to purchase a few spare batteries or get an extended battery. However, the problem with extended batteries is that the larger the capacity, the bulkier and heavier they are. Mugen currently makes a 3300mAh which lasts a long time, but is huge and rather unsightly. You may not want to use your Axim as a phone anymore with that installed!

Check out this thread for details:

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...ght=mugen+3300

As for BT headsets, take a look at the Accessories forum. Some popular headsets that keep on coming up include Logitech and the HP ones. There are also some newer ones out.

As for software, I have no idea.

Moved to Accessories.

Since vramabadran is running WM2003 on his X50 couldn't he do the hack that will enable him to do BT headphones and A2DP? Wouldn't using bluetooth as well run down the power faster? Just a thought. Also to help conserve power turn the brightness completley off unless you are using it. Also maybe use some program to actually turn the screen itself off (like in TCPMP I turn the screen off while listening becuase my playlist is in the order I like it in.)

Just my two cents.

BTW Welcome to Aximsite!!!

He could, but he wants to use his Axim as a cell phone substitute, meaning he will need a way to have GSM service all the time.

No point getting a bluetooth headset. You wont be able to use it with your GSM\GPRS card. You only have the option to use a wire headset as the sound doesnt go through your pocket pc. The only other option is to get a bluetooth headset with a transmitter and then you could plug that into the GSM\GPRS card.

I have a 2200 mah battery and I dont mind the extra weight at all. I would definitely recomend you get one of them. To help with battery consumption, get a program like XCPU Scaler and find the slowest speed you can set the processor too. Also turn the screen off as much as possible, you dont need any special software. Just press and hold the power button for 3-4 seconds and the screen will shut off.

I didn't say to turn off the GSM at any point, just the screen, so it will save battery power. Like when I'm using skype, if I get a call, the screen turns back on when it is off.

Thanks all for replying.
I AM begining to call this home.

Turning brightness off helped with the power consumption.
After 8 hours I am down to 25%.
I have used it for about 1hr and 15min of music + 15 mins of microsoft money and a few short calls. The more the use the faster the batt goes. Obviously!
So I am thinking between a 2200 and the 1100 mah I have I should be ok.
Will have to recharge daily but I guess i am ok with that.
If I get the 3300 mah I won't get a case I like.

As far as headsets/headphones go....

http://www.jabra.com/JabraCMS/NA/EN/...20s/JabraC220s

The link is to the Jabra C220s.
It is a corded headphone and headset.
plugs into both the axim and the g1 card.
so when a call comes in it pauses the music and strats it back when call is over. These are not very expensive.

I have read that there are similar stero bluetooth headsets.
They use bluetooth 1.2 as compared to the standard bluetooth.
Drawback. works in stero in headphone mode, switches to mono if you activate the mike for the phone. Not Good.
Has anyone seen any decent bluetooth headsets that work with the axim. Also need to see if I need to integrate it to the axim or the phone software.

Its been just 2 days with this 'toy' but I must say I am pleased.
I will not be going back to my phone. It does stick out a little more than I thought it would but I can live with it.
Having a phone/MP3 Player/PDA sure beets carrying 3 devices.

Just snapped a photo to upload.
Will clean it and make it pose later and get a few.

Let me know what you guys think.
and I will keep you updated on how it works out.
