Welcome to Aximsite!

The USB sync cable is a portable charging/syncing solution, but because of the high power draw of the X50/X51 series, will only charge when the device is powered OFF or when almost fully charged. See the Sync cable thread stickied to the top of this forum for more details:

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=64935

The cradle, while bulkier, will allow you to sync and charge when the device is powered ON, regardless of the current state of the battery. There is also a spare charging slot at the rear in case you want to charge two batteries at once. A cradle also allows you to do ROM updates since you need direct AC power for that.

The USB Sync cable can be connected to AC adapter for charging during usage. It's actually the same but cradle can charge spare battery. X51 low comes with USB Sync cable if I'm not mistaken.

Somebody on the boards is making a travel sync cable that connects you to external power, too, but I think for now that's right. Cradle = power and connect. USB Sync cable = connect and compact. Anybody want to design a landscape cradle for me?

I would think if anybody could design a landscape cradle it would be you.

I have a Dell charge/sync cable. While the unit is in the off condition and connected via the cable my unit will charge. I also have the standard cradle which has my second battery always in it charging and awaiting to be used. I am not sure obout second vendor sync cables and if they do the same as the Dell one I have. Both do a great job for me.

I received an X51v for Christmas. I previously used an iPAQ 5455. I boutght a L'il Sync Pro ("LSP") from Pocket PC Techs for the Dell device--I used the LSP a lot for my old iPAQ. However when I received my LSP, I saw on it a sticker saying that it will only charge the device when it's Off. Total bummer. As a result, I started using my old iPAQ AC adapter to charge the Dell when it's not in the cradle. I merely substitute the Dell connector for the iPAQ connector tip. I never thought I would still be ordering iPAQ accessories after I got my Dell, but I am going to order another iPAQ AC adapter to use as my "travel" charger for the Dell.

Using bluetooth won't suffice? I let my Axim sit on my desktop all the time (in landscape if I want to actually read the screen). I connect to my work laptop via a BT adaptor (which also works on my home PC, or many new laptops have BT built-in).

If you want it to sit up, grab a few pieces of wood and put something together Personaly I just prop it up on a speaker or the edge of my laptop or something.

I'm going to do the same thing, but in checking the Dell cradle, it shows 5.4 volts @ 2.4 amps while the iPaq charger shows 5 volts at 2.0 amps. Is this going to cause a problem? I don't know much about electrical stuff.

No. My husband is an engineer and he said that as long as the power supplied by the charger is equal to or less than the Dell charger, there is no problem with frying the device.

True ... but it might not work, either

It works. I've been using it for about a week with no untoward consequences.

It will work. The iPAQ charger will take a tiny bit longer to charge because of its slightly lower current rating.

I use the Belkin (Dell) USB Sync/Charger 99% of the time; the other 1% is when I need to charge spare batteries outside of the PDA, using the cradle then.

Belkin 3-in-1: in-car charger/wall charger/sync cable --- The way to go when traveling. (Listed on Dell's Axim accessories page)

Cradle to charge an extra battery, sync while charging, and a nice place to put the Axim on your desk while working and using it as it charges.
