Need an opinion
I am planning to buy a keyboard for my dell axim x50v, and I need some opinion on which one to buy. The ones I have seen so far are on dell website. I plan to use this for talking class notes and college stuff.

Bluetooth Keyboard

Belkin Snapntype keyboard

Belkin Infrared Keyboard

Also, what difference would it make to buy the infrared keyboard over the bluetooth keyboard, besides the $60 difference?

Thanks.

Just realized, sorry for putting this in the Hardware Troubles section. I didn't know where to post.

Hi Chewbacca

The difference other than cost is that the IR is less power hungry but does rely on line of sight; and if you shop around you may pick up one cheaper than Dell, I got mine from Expansys it was branded as the Palm Universal but was in fact a Think Outside IR keyboard and it worked very well.

However the Dell BT is another Think Outside keyboard which can be obtained more cheaply (Ithink) if you shop around, I moved on from the IR to the Bt and bought the mouse that goes with it, I don't use it alot but when I do I find it very useful, my only gripe - like many others - is the lack of a dedicated number row but this is no real biggy.

I would recommend shopping around for prices, search the forums for reviews but as a matter of preference I would go with the BT keyboard.

The Thinkoutside BT KB can be found for as low as $80. Here's the link via pricegrabber.com

I use Dell's Executive BT Keyboard and I love it. Good battery life, small, and easy to use. It is a little more expensive, but I believe BT is worth the extra money. I used my x50v and my BT keyboard to take notes in some of my college classes and it worked great. I have found it hard to find a keyboard that reliably can have the Axim rest on it while typing, but it isn't really bad.

One thing that you might have to look out for is that the BT keyboard on Dell's site (the first link you gave), is the keyboard for the x51/x51v. I thought I heard somewhere that that keyboard will not work with an x50/x50v. So I would make sure it does (reading up on it via reviews and specs online) before buying. Hope this helps, and happy shopping.

You've come to the right place for opinions

A lot of this is going to depend on the kind of typer you are. If you're a positional typer (asdfjkl), you'll want either a full sized keyboard or a one-handed keyboard. Check the other posts to your original question for the standard-sized keyboard, but I'm a fan of the frogpad as a one-handed keyboard. It also leaves one hand free to either hold your Axim or to hold your pen.

If you're a hunt-n-peck typer, you may want to consider the thumb keyboard (as a positional typer myself, I can't abide them ... but I know a few people who swear by them).

Otherwise, consider the length of time you plan to use the keyboard versus how often you charge or change batteries.

I personally use an HP branded bluetooth keyboard that I bought off Ebay. It works great although I rarely ever use it.

I have the belkin ir keyboard that I have had since my palm days. It works just fine once you find a line of sight. However, if I was buying today, I would go for the bluetooth.

I am also looking for a BT keyboard as I had an IR before and BT is better if you have the money for the extra cost. Remind you that you will rarely be out of sight of the PPC when typing so IR is also a good choice.
