What are the top 3 things I should do when I get my x51?
I am going to be ordering an AXIM X51(416Mhz)soon.

(FYI: Main use will be PIM, note taking, & reading word files and listening to music on the train. I don't need WiFi. When I need WiFi , which is rarely, I can fire up my laptop.)

I would like some advice on what I should order via the Dell site when I order my PDA; chargers? protectors? case? warranty? etc.

thanks,

I ordered spare stylii (I lose those), a spare battery (for those extended trips), and a VGA cable (only relevant to X51v).

As for cases, screen protectors, and SD/CF cards I went to another company.

I am a warranty person myself. I got the 3 YR and accidental protection since its an expensive item. You need a screen protector and cases.com has fast shipping on those and a discount coupon code

I'd suggest getting the Axim and playing with it for a little while before investing anything in accessories. Unless you know getting an accessory will help you focus on the device and use it more, it's too soon to know how you'll use it.

When I first got my Axim I didn't get anything with it except a CF card for storage. Soon I found I could really use a GPS system. Then I thought I could use it more for music, and thankfully was able to give my CF card to my wife (while I took an SD-card and got an ibiz CF radio). I'm still using the original Dell case, and have found most things I want to be free.

definitely get the metal case. be it the rhinoskin case from dell or something else, but a metal case for sure. I bought it, and it saved my axim from utter doom, dropping on concrete.

I agree generally with dougsnell's comments on taking a little bit to see what your usage habits are. But I do think a screen protector and a good case are worth getting right off the bat - only because I've had devices with scratched screens and it's a huge pain.

I would suggest one of the senacases flip-top opening cases if you're a big note-taker - as I believe they're much easier to work with then the metal cases that open like a book, but still offer a good level of protection. And they look very professional and elegant.

Thank you to you and all the others for your advice. Now that I have ordered my Axim, what are the first 3 things I should do when I get my x51? (after reading teh manual). Based on what Iread on this site, it seems like I shoudl be concerned about soem software updates.

Before using
1) Warranty
2) Case
3) Screen Protector

After Using
Totally your choice.

Definitely get an extended warranty (I recommend ADP). I would also get some screen protectors, but get those from some other company that is known for making them. A hardcase is always a plus. BT or IR keyboard is always a good addition too!

Am I just blindingly lucky (anyone who knows me ... shut up ), or is the x50v really resistant to scratches on the screen? I avoided a protector because when I first got it I was worried about how the vga screen might look through another layer of film. I've had my Axim over a year, and not a single ding.

I've also dropped it a few times, and not a scratch on the case. Granted I don't go slamming it into concrete, but if it were prone to damage, I'd have something visible.

I think yeah, blindingly lucky. Or possibly better at treating the Axim better.

I have managed to scracth the screens of more PDAs than I even care to remember - several times I think through over-enthusiastic use of the stylus - i.e. just too roughly I guess. Then again, I also have an odd portion of my brain which seems to continually lead my fingers to believe that harder pounding of keys on a laptop / desktop keyboard equals faster output ...
