Travel charger confusion after reading 1hr - boxwave, belkin, ppc tech, other?
I've been reading through this forum for an hour to finish my Axim x51v accessory shopping list. Thanks to advice from here and the discount offered to Aximsite members, I have already bought a Sena extended battery case and a boxwave crystal screen protector. All I need now is a travel charger, pen/stylus combo, and CF card.

For the travel charger, I have read this forum back and forth on this topic and there is so much conflicting info that I am not sure where to turn. The following have me in a headspin:

1) Is boxwave a bad company? Does their charger work?
2) Is PPC-techs a better place to buy from? Does their charger work?
3) Is the belkin charger found here: (click) the same one as the Dell one?

Before I started reading here, I was leaning towards the Boxwave power set found here: (click). I like the backup AA battery charger, the retractibility, the auto charger and the syncing. Also I like the fact I can get a x51v replacement stylus from them.

However, all I really *need* is the ability to charge my Axim while travelling via v110 or v220. The price is kinda high for this set. Then I read in many different threads that many people can't get it to work and that Boxwave is a lying/false advertising company. Is this truse? If thats the case is PPC techs a better place to buy from? The prices are similar. Does their charger work? It looks exactly the same as the Boxwave one.

Otherwise I can just get the Belkin with the great discount code for much cheaper but it doesn't list x51v compatibility and the cable looks pretty short. Alot of hotels have their plugs far from a table and I don't want to be charging my Axim on the floor (have stepped on previous Palms because of that).

Finally, it looks like if I go with either PPC techs or with Boxwave I am going to be spending around $80. Are there any codes to make this cheaper (I searched google and this site but didn't find any codes that work)? Because thats alot for chargers and a replacement stylus.

Thanks for any help clearing the confusion!

Edit: BTW, has anyone used the AA battery emergency charger found here: (click)? Does it work? Is it worth the hefty price tag?

I can't answer all your questions, BUT...
I have the Boxwave minisync cable and car charger. It works as advertised and will charge while the unit is on. It's also not terribly long, about 40" fully extended. The price was a bit steep, but they shipped quickly and I recieved my order in 3 days. I would consider a bigger battery before getting one of those funky emergency chargers, seems like money better spent to me.

Yes. Dell remarkets it. The cable itself is about six feet long. And the X50/X51 are identical in this regard.

Thanks guys! I'm positive I replied to this thread yestreday, my firefox has been acting wierd. I ended up getting the Boxwave mobile charging kit after reading Bagelsnbrew's confirmation that it works (thats a great culinary combo btw ). I was itchty to pull the trigger as my Axim arrives friday (fingers crossed) and, after spending $200 on the CF card, $57 didn't seem so bad . However at 6' I am thinking I should've got the Belkin . They really should add x51v to their compatibility list.

There has to be more to it than the in-car charger
I originally purchased a USB type charger rated at 5V-850mA before knowing any better...
Then, after reading about Lawman's set-up, I purchased a Radio Shack/The Source Universal Power Cord (car charger) #270-1594 rated at 12V-2A.
Unfortunately, the Ax doesn't seem to charge.
No charge light around the on-off button on the PDA, green, orange, or otherwise.
First I had Bluetooth enabled, and was running Pocket Streets. Ax power on "Auto", nothing else running, and the power steadily declined to 61%. I then exited Bluetooth, and Pocket Streets, and just left the power screen on (dimmed) and watched the level diminish to 60% over about 10 minutes (slow, but still no up-charge). All this with the car running, and the LED on the charger "green". I've tested the output at the tip of the cord, and (separately tested) the Dell plug to the Ax with the power cable to the docking station.
Am I missing something simple here??
Thanks for your patient pity

Is the setup you have really 12v at 2amps? Or is it selectable for 5v at 2amps?

If it's actually 12v then i'm sure your Ax won't charge because it's in protection mode. I think that the Ax will accept upwards to ~ 5ish volts before shutting down. That's just from hearsay though. I'm pretty sure that it won't take 12v though.

Whoa, hold on! Guys before buying.

fatiredflyer, Radioshack takes things back. So, if you bought the incorrect item, its no problem.

The charger I bought is to power a car mount. The conversion from 12V to 5V takes place in the Seidio G2500/G48xx car mount! You don't power the Axim directly.

I figured if you had read the threads that the thread was talking about a suitable replacement of the car power adapter that powers the car mounts!

To power and charge an Axim X50v/X51v directly, you'll need a charger rated at ~ 5.0+V rated at 2A. If your Belkin/Dell/whatever you want to buy indicated the above specs, then it should work. For this charger, I just bought the one from Dell's website -> "3-in-1 Travel Kit for Dell Axim X50 Handhelds"
to go with a Boxwave minisyncplus cable. I've been using this combination for nearly a year.

To power a car mount that is used to power and charge an Axim X50v, you need a ~ 12V rated at 2A or higher. The mount does the conversion from 12V to 5V. Some has reported that certain 2A does not work, but the RadioShack part in my signature works well for nearly a year now.

I guess I was absent that day, Teacher
But with Irish good luck, and the skill of the functional illiterate, (and a smidgen of credit to the Dell engineer that pushed for over-charge protection), the Ax didn't erupt in flames. It LIVES!
(Heavy sigh of relief)
Good news is, I now have the right power cord for the G4850S, and a renewed respect for my newbiness...
