Canadians Purchasing from eXpansys... get stuck with customs charge?
Hey guys... question for all those who bought stuff from eXpansys...

Did you get stuck with the duty/customs charge? i just bought a keyboard/mouse from them and apparently i have to pay almost $50 for something that cost me $170 with taxes and shipping i already paid them for?!?

Aw crap, I hope that's not the case. Who do you have to pay duty to? Not expansys I assume? There was no mention of that to me but I guess I'll have to wait. The only fortunate thing for me is that I'm expensing the purchase through work.

To top it off, after playing with the keyboard and mouse today, I can no longer get the mouse to connect!?! Anybody have some experience with failing bluetooth connections - Windows Mobile 3SE?

yeah ...that's the way things works for us canadian ...

I bought the X51V in the past from Ebay ( from USA)...delivered by FEDEX ... got ding for some $30 odd bucks later ( eventhough the seller did me a favour of stating item worth only $50 ... the form was from FEDEX saying that they paid the customs charged when they crossed the border & now I have to re-paid them

the letter came 2 wks after I got my package though

yeah same here... you pay to the importing company whoever the shipper (UPS, FEDEX etc.) deal with... i'm expensing it to my travel agency... so it doesn't really matter too much... but considering its my business it still comes out of my pocket, and changes the price from $170 to over $200 for the thing now... :S if i knew before i coulda just told my broker and he woulda done it for me free... and gotten it to me faster...

just wondering if it was a mistake, or if even when you buy from expansys you endup having to pay, since they always say including VAT... the guy that gave me the deal didnt' seem really know what he was doing, guess that's why i got the deal... but still... lol...

I purcheased Think Outside keyboard/mousse combo from Expansys and did not have to pay any duties. Total cost including taxes and shipment was just under $150CDN about a month ago.

Is it random?

In many cases it just depends on the carrier.

I would imagine there are cheaper brokers that you could use to pre-arrange duty payment... UPS, FedEx et al know that many people will not have arranged to pay duty, and charge through the nose for this "service".

all item crossed border cannot be accounted through duty/sustom all times ...thinks of the delayed

but most do ...that's how the country survive with the extra cash they takes out of our pockets

which reminds me ... doesn't this applied with the "FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS" between North America ??

I thought if products are within North America then we are exempt from custom taxes ???

Never ever ever have things shipped cross border by UPS. Sounds like FedEx isn't much better. If I can't get something shipped by USPS, I'll find another vendor. If it comes via USPS (and then Canada Post), there's a $5 fee + GST. If it's declared under $20, the fees are waived.

I've heard that if you plead ignorance, you might get away with claiming an item once without paying the large fees. Don't know if that's still true or not.

Mine was shipped via UPS straight to my door. Canada Post was not involved.

It seems any of the courier companies are the ones with which you usually get dinged. I had RAM purchased of ebay for $120CDN and got dinged $40 by UPS in customs fees. Anything that comes regularily doesn't usually get dinged

Same here.

~ 150 bucks CAD total.
- bought off expansys.ca
- they said it would be "including all VAT, duty, taxes ..."
- supposedly shipped from Illinois.
