from my limited experience and just my general knowledge about things, i would say that hard cases do a much better job at protecting against more damaging damage, if that makes sense. you see, if you are referring to normal wear and tear, scratches, etc.. the soft case will probably as good of a job, or even better (due to the fact that some metal cases will even scratch your pda themselves, actually i've only heard of 1 doing this and i can't remember what it was). but if you drop your axim on a corner or something, a hard case is going to absorb the pressure much better than a soft case would. a soft case would absorb some things, but the same amount of pressure would be there, causing the screen to break in many cases.
this also depends on the hard case though, if it has for example the corners exposed, it will do an even worse job at protecting against drops that hit the corners than soft cases.
as for your added part about accessability, the innopocket magnum case mentioned earlier allows full access to all ports (as far as i know). but many hard cases don't offer this.
