CF GPS Receiver on X51v
I recently upgraded from an Axim X5 to an X51V. My Holux CF GPS receiver worked fine in the X5 running Tom Tom Navigator 5. In the X51V however, it is recognised by Tom Tom but will not pick up any satellites and I get 'No GPS device!' in the GPS Status screen. I checked on the Holux website in case there was a driver available as I thought that might be the problem, but to no avail. Also, apart from 'CF_CARD GE, Native IR, Com3: and BT UART on COM5:' there is another option on the 'GPS is connected to' screen, 'Se???a?? ?a??d?? st??...' (that is exactly how it appears). Any ideas anyone? Oherwise, does anyone want to buy a CF GPS receiver?

See this thread for possible solution. It has worked for several of us with CF GPS receivers and X51V w/WM5.0 and various GPS software packages. It requires a replacement .dll file and a registry edit.

BTW, my CF GPS appears on Com4 and I have to make that setting manually in OCN5. I'm not sure if TT will detect it automatically so you may also need to make a manual setting.

I have a Holux GM-270 CF GPS and it works fine on my Axim x51v. I used the GPS config in Settings. App = COM1, hardware = com4 & 4800baud and managed checked.Using iGuidance

I thought the big thing with Tom Tom was the very limited support for CF GPS devices. That's why I went the Routis ==> iGuidance route.

Thanks for the suggestions you guys.

'It requires a replacement .dll file and a registry edit.' How does one do that on a PDA?

I downloaded WinFast Navigator and the X51v received the sattelite data from the Holux GM270, fleetingly, 'can't get it to do it again.

Also, Tomtom still does not recognise it.

It looks like I shall have to buy a BT receiver. Incidentally, I particularly wanted a CF receiver so that I could use the BT facility on the X51v to download traffic updates from Tomtom on the fly from my mobile phone, ie, whilst still using the GPS. I imagine you can only use one BT application at a time. Is this correct?

I don't know about you guys but since using Tomtom to get around London I have found it removes the requirement to take any notice of where you are. I blindly follow the lady's instructions and make no attempt to remember the route myself. I was driving back to my office from south London recently and mis-hit the Favourites button. I was well on the way to the wrong destination before I realised. Maybe an inoperative satnav system is not such a bad thing after all!

I'm a bit surprised that your cf gps worked "fine" on the x5 without a some sort of a work around. TomTom dropped support of cf gps's with the TT2004 release. I grew tired of dealing with applying the work around every time I started TomTom and the accompanied stability issues and went with iGuidance. When I moved to the X51v, I chucked the cf gps entirely and went bluetooth. It's nice to start my nav software and have it work and not crash without having to reconfigure the modem every time.

Good luck!!!

Download the zipped elserial.dll to your desktop PC, unzip it and sync/transfer it to your Axim's windows\ directory. The registry edit necessary to call elserial.dll requires a third party registry edit program. There are several commercial utilities that do this (and more) but I used PHM Regedit. It's frreware/shareware and can easily be found via Google.

The detailed instructions for the edit are contained in that other thread I linked for you in the previous message.

Good luck.

Given Up!
Despite following threads various and having now spent two weekends sitting at the PC (much to the annoyance of the Management, who wanted me to help with a few household chores) I have consistently failed to get the CF GPS working.

Decided to bail out and ordered a Holux GR-231 BT unit from an outfit based in Taiwan ($80 for the BT receiver and a car cradle/charger) via E-Bay. Candy Hou, with whom I have corresponed by e-mail, was extremely helpful.

Sold the X5 and CF GPS to a work colleague (who is delighted) for £130. So not a total loss after all.

Thanks anyway you guys.

History
BTW, I have been using PDAs since 1985 (when they were described as 'only used by a few diehard enthusiasts' ) as follows:

Psion Series 1 > Psion Series 3 > Psion Series 5 > Casio E 105 > Axim X5 > Axim X51v.
