Dial-Up Connection To Surf The Internet
I understand that with the Axim X51v, if one is using a modem (separate card) to establish a dial-up connection, an ISP is required. My questions are:

1) Is it possible to use AOL?
2) If not then which popular ISP's, MSN, Earthlink, etc., can one use to establish a dial-up connection to access your mail and use the Internet browser within to surf the internet? I'm not just interested in IM or accessing email, but also accessing the internet from the Axim.

I think most popular ISPs cant be used even if they dont require a proprietary dialer or browser. I believe SBC works. I use a crappy free one.

You mentioned you use a free one - do you mean an ISP that is free? Which one would that be? I thought SBC merged with AT&T. I checked AT&T and they state that their software does not yet support internet access for a PDA - only via a PC.

i have a Dial Up card and I can use it fine with any service that you can get an access number to and does not require their dialer.

If you can go and make a new connection in Windows, Fill in the number, username, password, and get connected without installing any of the companies software, you should be good to go.

I use earthlink and they say nothing of supporting PDAs, but it is just a dial up connection so it works great

So what you're saying is that one subscribes to Earthlink and now they become your ISP. Then by using one of their access numbers (a local one for you), inserting one's User ID and password in the PDA, one can access the internet in a dialup mode connection.

That sounds simple enough. Am I missing anything?

I know if I try to connect to AOL doing that, it won't connect to their service. One can connect via TCP/IP by being connected to another ISP, but I would imagine the Axim operating system does not support TCP/IP or does it?

Of course there is another way I believe by inserting a wireless card in the PC which is connected either via dialup or broadband and then sort of piggy-back off of the PC wirelessly, but that requires you to have your PC connect to the internet. The only problem with that is that if you are not home, then that method won't work.

I bought a BT modem (Billionton Bluetooth 56K Modem) on eBay for about $50, as I remember. Telephone line plugs into it and you can then roam while connected by BT. Also acts as external modem for other uses if you need such a device. Since it doesn't occupy one of the card slots you can retain all your data intact on the Axim.

Try Copper.net for a great dialup service for only $10 a month. I've never had a problem connecting in all my travels in the US.
