sw0000t i just got back from the mall. had my mom in town, so we had to do the whole bored to death dunno what to do lets go to the mall thing. while we were there, Sam Goody's was going out of business because of their recent bankruptsy...
i got a pelican power brick from there, and a car charger with an fm modulator for $13 each and both work flawlessly. i couldn't be any more happy with this purchase. with these prices, they are going quick, so if you have one in your area going out of business because of the bankruptsy, i'd suggest going there tomorrow.
the charger i got with the fm modulator built in is called the:
Power Wave by Datel.
it has a fm modulator in it, which, for those who don't know, is a thing that plugs into your headphone jack and will broadcast what is playing to an FM channel... which then can be tuned in by any fm tuner in range (useful for in your car if it doesn't have a way to connect the axim to it). the audio quality is so-so. if you've delt with fm modulators before, this will be no worse than you've already heard. the signal strength, however, is remarkable. it will even overpower some weaker radio stations. it has the 3 frequencies: 88.3 88.7 88.9. i've used many other fm modulators that were so weak they just weren't even worth using, but i'm telling you, this one is excellent.
the only problem with it is, it does not rebroadcast in sterio.
anyway, hope this helps someone. good luck on your local sam goody's shopping :D. even if you have to pay the full price for the car charger + fm modulator, it's well worth it. especially considering the fact that the fm modulator i got from radio shack cost $30 and didn't work for crap (the signal strength of it is absolutely amazing as far as how WEAK radio shack's transmitter was).
i may add pictures and a complete review later, but i'm telling you, you will not be disappointed.
edit: crap. my pelican power brick was charging during this post, and i think now i may have gotten one that does not work properly with the axim :(. sam goody's is a reputable source, so i assumed (hoped) the power brick would work. i did look on the shelves for a good while to see if there was not another one, and there wasn't (i asked an employee and he said everything in stock was on the shelves). i tried recharging my pda and it did not work. i didn't have the power brick fully charged yet when i tried that though, i will fully charge it and report back, maybe just maybe i will get lucky.
anyway, if you go to sam goody's to buy a power brick, bring a ruler or something to make sure you get the smaller one (if you are unsure about the size or what the heck a power brick is, read the
pelican power brick review. one sure-fire way to tell if you have the big one or small one without needing a ruler or anything is to check if the one you are getting has little plastic dotted looking feet on the back/bottom of it. another thing you will notice about the feet is, they seem off center. the top feet are right above the sticker (while holding it to read the label naturally), while the bottom feet are at the very bottom in the corners.
oh well, i guess it's not so bad. i do have a good friend who owns a PSP, i may just give it to him as a present lol.
edit2: also, so you know, i tested the car charger and it works flawlessly. i wouldn't have known a difference if it were advertised for use with the axim.
edit3: the fm modulator sounds excellent if you put your axim's headphone volume to 30%. anything over that kinda maxes out the modulator and causes peaking and audio tearing. not to fear though, at 30% headphone volume it will still not be much less in volume than other radio stations.
