How much differance in battery life does a microdrive actually make
Hi, I was planning on getting a Compact flash card for my axim x51v but realised i could get a 4gb microdrive for the same price as a 2gb compact flash, now i know that mircodrives use more battery but was wondering on what sort of level, does it drain the battery in half the time? would it be worth me getting a 2200mhn battery for it as well?

Thanks

It uses a lot more power if you're constantly accessing the MD for something like a movie or maps for a gps app. For something like that, a CF is better. Now, MD actually draws less power than CF while it is sleeping, so if you use it for intermittent access, then go for the higher capacity MD.

The CF will tend to be faster reading/writing than the MD, but it's not like the PDA has a screaming fast data bus anyway. I use my CF in my camera as well as my pda, however, so I try to go for the extra speed CF.

You might not know this, but the CF slot on the x51 series has some occasional issues with not being recognized with a card in it after a hard reset, so just to warn you. I don't use my CF slot that much at the moment since the SD slot doesn't seem to have the same problems.

O.k. cool, I will probably be using the card to access movies and music on the go, Probably in the car but also for a couple of hours whilst walking, I will get a car charger, The tomtom gps uses its own sd card anyway so thats not a problems, So it should be o.k. for what i want to do?

I have a 8gb seagate micro drive. After doing A06 ROM update and applying the 'Fake Server Trick' I have not had a single issue with SD or CF card loss. As far as battery drain the micro drive will take more juice. I made my choice based upon the need (or preceved need my wife says) for the additional capacity. Based upon that I was willing to pay the price in extra battery drain. I have two Dell standard batterys which I change out at the end of each day. When I do alot of movie watching, pdf viewing/reading or large spreadsheet work using my micro drive I often am forced to change out 2/3 of the way through the day. A price I am willing to pay.

If you're not planning on being too far from a charger then I'd go for the extra storage of a MD. I used a MD on a flight recently and watching one hour and a half movie from it drained my full battery (1100 mAh) to about 10%. However...that was still enough juice to listen to music (also on the MD) for another 2 hours with the screen off and still not go dead.

My strategy is to use a portable USB on-the-go drive. It's a battery operated 20GB drive that lets me download files to my SD card without a computer. This way I get 20GB of storage at my fingertips without sacrificing battery life or shock-resistance benefits of flash memory.
