X51v and GPS Setup (Australia maps)
Hi - have searched the archives as much as I could and cannot find a direct answer to this, so:
Being a total novice to GPS, what is the best GPS setup for use with an X51v. There seem to be all sorts of GPS receivers available, CF Card, SD Card, Bluetooth.... is there anyone than can offer a little bit of guidance as to which is best.
Also software wise Tomtom seems to be everywhere, but are there others that are better / cheaper, and which is the best for Australian road use, (or can an Australian map 'package' be added to any system setup??
Not wanting to spend loads, but am after a good setup for use in the car..!
Thanks in advance for your help.
Nick.

I like Bluetooth GPS's myself, I love not having any wires.
I also use TomTom 5 and love it. Hands down it is the best navigation software. I recently bought an Axim after having used a Palm for many years. On the Palm, I used both Mapopolis and TT5. After using TT5, I would never go back to Mapopolis.
TT5 has better points of intrest, more choices for planning your route and better graphics.
Just my 2 cents.

X51v GPS bundle recommendations please.....
Thanks for you replies. However, I seem to be getting more and more confused despite having read the GPS section on Aximsite and having visited both the buygpsnow.com and the Destinator websites.
Can anyone please recommend a good setup for use with my Axim x51v. I would prefer to use a CF card receiver, and I have heard that I have to use Destinator software due to the mapping for Australia being so limited. However, what I need is some advice, as follows:
1. Once and for all, does Destinator PN work with WM5 or not??
2. Out of the following CF card receivers (Globalsat 337, Haicom 303 III, Haicom Hi-305, Haicopm Hi 305 III) which is the best for general foot / vehicle use?
3. With the Haicom 305, I have heard that the built-in SD card slot will not work runningWM5 - is this true??
Thank for your help. Just trying to make sure that I understand exactly what I am buying before I take the plunge....
Thanks.

You can get destinator PN to work with WM5 with some work (extra programs ect)
however i myself still get large menu buttons and cannot use the full potential of the program!!!!!
So to answer your question, yes it does but not 100%

Hi,
I recently bought the Holux GR-271 CF GPS, and am running TT6 on the x51v.
I didn't do much research about this setup, but to date I'm disappointed with the performance.
Despite being SIRFIII and supposedly taking <45 sec for a cold start, its 3-4 minutes before the unit is locked onto a position, from being stationery.
Of the few times I've tried it, the TT will short of 'hang', say after turning a corner, stopping at red light, etc. I then kick start it again by going to the TT menu, which then acquires a signal for a little longer ie. it doesn't work.
Something I should have done before buying the CF GPS, I looked on Aximsite and read some postings about CF GPS not working well with WM5, and better off using bluetooth.
Prior to using the Axim, I borrowed a friend's TT One and its against that performance that I compare TT on Axim.
Options:
1. Get bluetooth receiver, and dump the CF receiver
2. Upgrade Axim ROM (haven't done much research, so not really sure if this will fix it)
Not considering change in GPS software as I'm very satisfied with TT.
Anyone with similar experience or success with this pairing?
Thanks for sharing!

You should upgrade the ROM to the latest A12 - several people have reported that it fixed some issues with CF GPS receivers.
I personally prefer bluetooth because you can position the receiver for maximum reception and convenience.
TT6 should have Australian maps as well - according to their website, they have 77.8% coverage.

Thanks. Will give the upgrade a go.
I test tried the Holux bluetooth GPSlim 236 today and it paired and worked fine.
I assume that ROM A12 won't affect bluetooth pairing and functionality.
Cheers!
