There's a little switch inside the headphone jack, you can see it. It switches the audio output. Which is why when you plug an external mic into the headphone jack you have to unplug it to hear the audio.

Thanks, and the microphone? When I insert a 4 pole plug and tap on the internal mic, it still seems operational.

The Axim will sense if an external mic is connected properly. Condenser mics sometimes need a separate power source to work. Do a search on my posts and you will find some info on this.
Typically though, just connect a condenser mic (observe the correct polarity: neg is ground and pos is the mic output) to the third ring and ground and it should work.

I just built an adapter using parts from a local electronics parts shop (Philcap in Akron in case anyone lives in the area ;)
$4 for the 4-conductor plug and about $3 for a 3.5mm Y-splitter to gut for the connectors.
Works perfectly, but it was a pain in the ass and a half to assemble. On the other hand -- I think buying the $5 Skype headset + 30min SkypeOut Credit kit from RadioShack, ripping the connectors off the headset and splicing on the 4-conductor minijack would prove to be a cleaner and easier solution. Rather than trying to mash two minijacks into a pigtail/mold that only fits one like I did.
However, as is with any other connector -- I do worry about it's durability. Are Axim headset jacks generally reliable? How quickly do they fail?

If you look through the postings, you will find a small number of users whose earphone jacks have failed. There are two types of failures generally. The first is that the solder joints holding the connector to the circuitboard fracture/crack casusing intermittent connections. The second is that the actual scpring contacts inside the connector housing either lose their springyness or get jammed in an open connection, causing the internal speaker to not work when the plug is removed. There are a number of complaints of noisy connections as well.
As with all information given out here, please remember that the majority of users don't complain when everything is working, so what you're going to see here are the users that have problems. Considering the number of Aximsite members, it's a small number of failures.
Hope this explanation helps.

Hello everybody, thanks for all the useful information.
I found a great place to get the 4-conductor plug. It's only $1.35 each.
They also sell the female stereo plugs for only $0.15 each.

I'm guessing, but I've got a 4 pin headset cable that works just like it should in ordinary 3,5 mm jacks, so it might work.
I created a 4 pin -> 2 x 3 pin adapter instead just to use with my axim.

Will 3 connector standard headset work in x51v?
I have a wired 3 prong headset I use with my cell phone: 1 earpiece, 1 mic. If I purchase a 3 prong 1/8" to 1/4" adaptor and then plug my headset into my axim will it work with Skype as a mic/headset combo?
I see several posts on a 4 prong stereo with mic adaptor but I haven't seen adapting a traditional 3 prong headset addressed.
Thanks

In a word, no.
I have been tinkering with ideas on how to make this work for a while now. I have nothing to show as of yet.
