Performance of Mugen batteries
Hi guys,

I'm wondering if the capacity of Mugen batteries for x50/x51 are as stated. Recently this website has done review of both 1800mAh and 3300mAh batteries to the standard 1100mAh (see http://www.aximsite.com/articles/link.php?id=304 & http://www.aximsite.com/articles/link.php?id=337). On the close examination in only the first test has Mugen batteries performed as expected (see attachment). In other two tests all three batteries perform worst than expected and the underperformance can be as large as 20%. I have also tested my own 1800mAh battery using acbPowerMeter (see http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...ghlight=extend) and found similar underperformance in power exhaustive tests.

I believe that most people who buy these batteries do so that they can run more power hungry applications (WiFi, GPS etc) and I feel that while these batteries may have the theoretical capacities stated they certainly do not perform so in real life. The real performance of these batteries are 1600mAh, 2000mAh and 2800mAh respectively.

Thank you.

Oleg

Wow, thanks for the good info. Have you compared this to other batteries? Like Dell's own extended battery?

Hi akao,

As I don't own any of those batteries I certainly was not able to do that.

What I did found interesting is that the standard Dell battery got benchmarked by me to be 1090mAh which is close to the 1100mAh claimed when Mugen batteries did not. I then remembered that I saw review of these batteries on Aximsite and checked my numbers against theirs. As you can see from reviews even with the brand new batteries capacity in real usage test varies. I'm not an engineer so I cannot give a reason for this but as a user I would prefer that batteries be labelled with the lowest capacity they can deliver.

For all the batteries you have used in this test, have you charge and discharge them till they are at their peak performance?

Gelo,

If I do buy a Dell battery, I'll run the same test and let you know. In my own experience with batteries by different manufacturers on a digital SLR camera (Canon 300D), there was a wide range of how long it will last. By far, the best were the ones by Canon, and the others were clearly inferior. I bought the new non-Canon batteries because the one that came with the camera was not working as well as when it was new, and to my dismay the old Canon one still worked better than the new non-Canon ones.

In short, I believe your results could represent real world experience, though I have no idea what the battery makers can be doing differently... Better Lithium? Better ions? <shrug>

Hi guys,

What I presented in the table are the results from the reviews. As I have mentioned earlier I only have two batteries: standard Dell and 1800mAh Mugen. I have not presented the result of my testing but just converted the tables in the reviews into minutes and then presented the analysis of results. I'm still unclear why different usage should produce such fluctuations.

The tests I've were performed were on the batteries I had for a while. I did not discharge/recharge my batteries before testing, I might do this next time. This however had little effect on the standard Dell battery.

Oleg
