I normally recommend "Work" as the option for connecting to wireless networks ("The Internet" and "My ISP" options were originally designed for a direct connection to your ISP altough there really aren't any practical differences in these options in WM5).
If you get an error "Unable to connect with current settings," try going into the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Set up my Proxy server. On the Proxy server tab, check the top box (This network connects to the Internet) but leave everything else on this page blank. On the General tab, the name should be "My Work Network." OK and then select the Advanced (tab), Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both of the pull down lists.
You don't need a code from your ISP unless the hotspot is a commercial one (not free) but run by your ISP. For example, many hotspots are run by T-mobile so you could could have an account with them for cellular service and WiFi. BTW, while there are many free hotspots, there are also many that are commercial that requires an account with the company (in addition to T-mobile, Wayport and Boingo are common providers).
