Magnesium, Aluminium and Leather Cases
This site has helped me make up my mind...I just placed an order for the Dell Axim x51v! Gee...I hope that those rumors bout the axim being cancelled aren't true.

Anyway, I was thinking of buying a case for my new axim cause I'll be carrying it around a lot in the wards(I'm a med student). Being a first-time pda user, I need some choosing the right case.

Here are the things I look for in a case:
1. Able to protect my axim from a chest-level fall(about 5 feet I guess)
2. Shouldn't add too much weight or size to the axim.
3. Looks classy(if possible).

So I've decide to get either a magnesium, aluminium or leather case. Specifically, I'm leaning towards the Innopocket magnum case, the PDair/innopocket aluminium case and the Krusell leather case(top flip).

I've got a couple of questions I hope you guys will be able to help me with:
1. It seems that the Krusell case is "compatible with the Dell Axim X50, X50v, X51, and X51v". However, the X51v's screen is 3.7 inches while the X50's screen is slightly smaller at 3.5 inches. Does this mean that part of the screen of my x51v will be obscured by the case?

2. Has anyone's device suffered from a fall while in any of these cases? How bad was the fall and how well did it protect the pda?

3. Are the magnesium and aluminium cases 100% metal or are there some plastic components(esp hinges). Also, is the belt clip for the Krusell case made of plastic...and how sturdy is it?

Sorry for the long post, hope to get some answers.

BTW, I know many ppl around here are dying to know if if A08 is available. I'll post my version number up as soon as my unit arrives!

Hi,

Congratulations on your purchase.

I can tell you the Magnum case does have some plastic components, it's not all metal. But I still believe it's the best case: great proteciton, and flip top cover. That's a killer combination. (No, I don't work for Innopocket, I just really like the case and the company).

The mag will fit the 51V, and it's very nice case,

You also want some nice screen protectors and that's where you want to get the v size ones

welcome to aximsite

The leather case will be exposing teh full screen on an X51v. The magnum case is the best if you are looking for a flip top. The book case is also good too as I used both and the protection is hard to beat. I dropped mine about 4 feet high and the case wad a scratch but the Axim worked fine.

If you wear it on your belt in tiem the paint will be rubbed off but the protection is still there and you can paint it again with car paint sample.

Not anymore. The first one I bought was among the first one made. It was flaking a lot, however, I emailed them a few weeks ago, send them a few pictures of my case, and they sent me a new one. This one has a much better paint coating.

I have the Inno Mag case and it's great ... but there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

- how much battery life do you need? If all you're doing is checking up on Epocrates here and there the the regular 1100mAh battery should be fine.

- however, if you're in need of extended runtime and you're pulling long shifts etc ... then you may want to consider buying an extended battery like the 2200mAh or the 3300mAh battery and then choosing an appropriate case for it like the ones you can find over at cases.com

- if you really like the inno but may need or unsure of your overall battery requirements then you'll have to figure out when you're going to charge your Ax or if you're going to get a battery extender or bring a usb sync cable to work/school to charge it off a computer ...

I feel the leather cases protect the Axim better, and are more durable.
There have been reports that in a drop the case gets bent or broke, while saving the Axim.
Since a good case cost at least $30, I'd like one that will last.

i have the innopocket magnum, and my girlfriend has the rhinoskin aluminum. my girlfriend is a clinical pharmacist, so she carries it around the hospital as well.

here are my impressions:

innopocket positives:
- hole in back for reset
- flips open vertically so easier to hold
- very lightweight
- seems sturdy

innopocket negative
- paint scratches off when dropped
- can be difficult to remove from case (tight fit)
- plastic components

rhinoskin alumnum positive:
- almost all metal construction
- aesthetically pleasing
- adequate protection

rhinoskin negative:
- opens from the side
- no reset hole

I would just add that Innopocket Magnesium case works great for me. It is stylish, holds my x51v very securely and has the reset hole on the back ( trust me, you will need it once in a while )

Also, the magnesium case is very slippery on clothes. Be careful putting it into shirt pockets. I would use belt clip.

besides that, this is the best case I have used. Great looking and I am sure it will keep your pda secured.

Are you a physician bill_n_opus?
I'll probably use my axim for epocrates and some skyscape apps, and maybe a movie or mp3 every once in a while. I bought a spare 1100 mAh battery from dell just in case.
Is the magnum's belt clip sturdy? And does the tight fit cause damage to the axim when ít's removed from the case?
