[HOW TO] Fix the Rhinoskin Stud
There are three design problems with the Rhinoskin belt clip stud on the X5X Aluminum Case.
Problem #1 Rhinoskin supplies nylon and rubber washers for use under the stud. Nylon easily compresses, and the preload which creates the friction which keeps the screw from backing out goes away. I figure somebody at Rhinoskin felt that putting rubber in there would stop backing out, but only the opposite happens: the rubber also stress relaxes under compression, and only adds to the problem.
Problem #2 The head of the stud is knurled (like a quarter) for ease of finger tightening. This knurling tends to catch on the plastic and help problem #1 go faster as the case swings on your belt.
Problem #3 It's very rough pushing the case stud into the belt clip. This is because of the knurled stud too. Take a look at the >< inside your plastic belt clip. It's probably getting worn toward ) ( already. This is what happens to plastic when you drag knurled metal across it!
Solution #1 Remove the nylon and rubber washers, and replace them with the same-sized metal washer, preferably stainless steel. Make sure the rounded side of the washer goes onto the stud first so it faces the shoulder of the stud.
Solution #2 While you have the stud off, go to a polishing wheel and patiently remove the knurling down to smooth metal... like removing the rough edge of a quarter until it resembles a nickel. Be sure not to booger the threads up. If you have something M3x0.5 threaded to put onto the screw threads during this polishing, it will help prevent this.
Solution #3 Install the modified stud assembly from #1 and #2 with a screwdriver, use medium tightening force. Don't under or over do it.
There you go, your Rhinoskin belt clip will work smoother, last longer, and you won't have to worry about your case falling off the clip, and your Axim on the asphalt!
