Compact Flash troubles
Don't you think it might be a good idea to pin an X51V thread on compact flash known to work and also the best place to buy them (in UK).

I bought a Sandisk 2gb compact flash on Ebay from an apparantly reputable dealer. It worked perfectly and was the stated size. However seeing some threads about counterfeit Sandisk cards I decided to ask Sandisk how I could tell if the card was counterfeit. I gave the number off the thin end and they confirmed it was counterfeit. The seller has agreed to provide a full refund on receipt of the card.

(Seems bad that the only way to know whether you have a counterfeit card is to ask the manufacturer. Must be lots of people with counterfeit cards who don't realise and the manufacturers don't seem to be doing much about it. You would think it would be easy to stamp on sellers who were selling hundreds of counterfeits on Ebay)

I then bought a 4gb Viking card after checking the Viking Interworks site to make sure it was compatible with an X51v. On receipt I find that the X51v does not recognise the card. Now returning this one for a refund.

Decided to try a 2gb cheap card from Expansys, they offered next day delivery and I needed a card quickly so that I could transfer all my files across and return the counterfeit Sandisk card. Hopefully that card will work ok.

As mentioned in my post I went for a 2gb cf card from Expansys:

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=CF-2GB

£30.95 plus postage which seemed a good deal. Tested in my X51V and it worked fine.

It's called 'Ora' on their web site and they say it was previously marketed under the eXpansys brand name. The Compact Flash itself is branded DANE-ELEC.

As a matter of interest I wanted to compare the difference in speed between it and the counterfeit Sandisk Ultra II 2gb card. I copied a 6mb file from memory to card:

Dane-Elec 16 seconds
Counterfeit Sandisk 11 seconds

So although I might have been better off keeping the counterfeit card, on principle I am not willing to encourage these people. I have read some horror stories about the other types of crime these gangs get into!
