8BG CF or 8GB Microdrive?
I'm looking at either the 8GB Transcend Compact Flash card, or the 8GB SanDisk Microdrive. Obviously the SanDisk carries a higher premium (though with superior performance), but that aside, what would be the advantage of one over the other?

Microdrive is cheaper, cf more expensive. Microdrive uses more power, cf uses alot less power, and both read at about the same perfformance. There you go.

And don't cover the breather hole!
Select Microdrive Mode if you use TCPMP to view audio/video files.

I'm happy with my 8GB Seagate but from casual shopping, it seems that the price difference between the two formats is not that great anymore. If the price were within $10 or so, I'd go with the CF for the reduced power consumption and mechanical simplicity.

currently flash-based CF drops price like crazy
I have patriot 8GB CF, it works well with X51v
I can tell the different when you use it with HP HX2415, CF is a lot more stable with GSPlayer (Seagate skips sometimes), and CF has more battery time than MDrive (esp playing audio files)

Flash is better, no moving parts equals less chance of failure in my humble opinion

*points to his MyPDA*

Yeah, I'm for flash. When I got my 8GB CF it was less than $20 more than the Seagate Microdrive (NewEgg and Buy.com, respectively). There is one major advantage to microdrives, though, which is irrelevant to a PDA: essentially unlimited write cycles. The Samsung laptop that uses flash won't last very long, as Windows constantly reads and writes from the hard drive. Windows Mobile doesn't do that in order to conserve the Flash - it transfers all files that need to be continuously updated to the RAM (hence most of the disappeared space). Oh, and they can write about 3 times faster.

be extremely careful when buying memory cards from ebay. Chances are u might buy a fake one. Def. don't ever buy one from China. 95% chance its gonna be fake.

I don't think MEMS will last very long if it's being written to constantly either. The high voltage power supply that powers the electrostatic parts in the MEMS unit will be pretty heavily strained. There's no definite write cycle limit, though.
