I have yet to actually purchase my handheld yet, I was actually going to do that this afternoon, but I wanted some advice first as to whether or not I should invest in an extra battery. I have read many complaints about the battery life, but I didn't know if those werejust before the ActiveSync fix is applied. With the fix in place, how is the battery life for the X51 520mhz?

Having just lost my extra battery , I can live without it, but it was sure nice to have. You can buy extended batteries, which alot of people like, but they do add weight and bulk to the device.
I tend to keep mine in the cradle while at work and carry a power cord if I am going to be at meetings all day long. But sometimes you just aren't near any juice and knowing you have an extra one in your pocket.
I always recomdmend an extra battery.Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.Get your Axim first, play with it and see for yourself. If you order the battery from Dell you will pay too much. There are better places to get a battery cheaper.
I've been using the 2200mAh battery I ordered with my Axim since I first got the unit. I keep the original battery around for a backup.
Yes, the larger battery does add weight and bulk to the unit, but if you use it all day long, then it will be worth your while to get the Extended Battery.
I am now used to the little "hump-back" that the larger battery adds to the Axim, and in fact, I use it to hold on to the device while watching video or reading an e-Book. The biggest drawback is the need for a case that fits the larger battery.
But try it with the original battery, and if you find you need more juice to make it through the day, try the Mugen batteries. I've read some good things about them here on Aximsite.
Okay, I'm going to not order the extra battery when I order the device, I'll wait and see if it's something I really need for how much I'll use it.
You were talking about other types of batteries. Do the other types fit normally, or would I have to have a special case to accomodate one of the other battery types?
I have two standard Dell batteries. One I keep in the charger. I change out the batteries each night for the next day. If I lost one of my batteries I would be lost. Can not do with out two at this time.
I work 16 hour shifts on the weekends and 2 1100 ma batteries are essential for me to get through the day. that, and the peace of mind that I will not be without my axim should I get the desire for music, movies or games!

The 1100mAh batteries fit in the Axim's battery compartment, keeping the back of the unit flat. This allows the Axim to fit in most of the available cases.
The 1800mAh Mugen battery comes with a replacement battry cover, which increases the thickness of the Axim slightly, allowing it to fit in most normal soft cases. (Leather)
The 2200mAh batteries also come with a replacement battery cover. This adds a 1/4" bump to the back of the unit. There are special cases from most maufacturers to fit the Axim with an extended battery inside. These cases may not hold the Axim as well if you use the original 1100mAh battery.

Where do you buy your batteries?
I assume they are generic brand batteries....
Is it safe to use (do they leak after a while)?
Will it void the warranty?
I ordered my Axim x51v last night, and shopped around for less expensive batteries. I ordered a 2200mAh from www.global-batteries.com for $15.40 plus shipping.

the 2200mA battery is less expansive than the 1100mA...
Wow… that is cheap. I'm thinking of ordering a second 2200 battery because if I carry my 1100 as a spare, I still have to carry the other battery door or a spacer… so I might as well carry a larger battery for a spare.
Does anyone see any reason why I would need to keep the original Dell battery?

I have a cradle for work, a travel sync for hotels and a car charger for using my GPS on the road. When I take really long flights, it's great to have an extra battery so I can wake up and watch movies. Some planes now have sockets for the car charger, but they are often scattered about the plane so whether you get one is just the luck of the draw.
