Solar Charger that actually works - X51V
All:

There are about 8,000,000 threads with solar questions and answers so I am starting this one just to state what worked for me without anyone having to dig through all the threads.

I was able to get the Auroa Solar CF101A with the USB adaptor. I went with the USB adaptor since I also have a car charger that used a USB interface to the Axim.

Anyhow ~ in good sun it appears that I get around 20% per hour with the standard battery. The Axim, at least in the case of the X51V, does need to be turned off for the unit to take a charge.

The charger was $49.95 and the adaptor was around (can't remember) $7 to $10. Basically for $60.00 the Sun can keep my Axim going and since I have a window in my office, I am nearly always good to go. My personal opinion - CF101A is a good choice.

The gentleman at Aurora Solar was prompt to ship my order and was helpful in helping me select the right adaptor for my needs. If this was EBay I would give this experience a 100%.

Good luck all.

No, its not big. It is at home right now, but my estimate is that it is 6" long and 2.25" wide when closed and 6" X 4.5" when open. it might be pushing 5/8" thick when closed.

It could fit into your pocket when it is shut (dockers or baggie jeans). In tighter fitting pants you might look like you are trying to show-off by hiding a potato in your front pocket

there's battery extenders that can charge w/AA batteries, that are a lot cheaper that can provide a better charge than that can.

Well, depends on the purpose and I would rather just carry the solar charger around than batteries (standard or Li/Ion, NiMH), since I am not in need of a 'quick' charge, or extension of PDA battery life. I use the Axim off and on so with the solar charger I can keep it topped off most of the time.

They all serve different purposes, but in this case I was only speaking of the solar side of things.

Ok, thanks for the input but this thread was for "Solar Charger that actually works - X51V"

I am fully aware that there are other solutions when it comes to charging the Axims as well as solar charging AA, AAA, C, D batteries.

Eric:

Why bother posted here? If there was no point then there would not be a market for it. There are solar chargers for cell phones, PDA, game devices (GameBoy, DS, PSP, etc). Apparently there is a point. Are you going to wonder around with a bunch of batteries so you can charge your device? What happens when your batteries are empty?

Wow, I so you can charge at night. When you run out of good batteries, I will just use the sun as I do now.

Oh, I suppose you could buy a solar battery charger and NiMH batteries. I could too but since I don't need them the C H A R G E R is perfect for my needs.

I remember reading about solar chargers a while back.. Here be the link..

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...=solar+charger

Brando sell one http://shop.brando.com.hk/solarchargerforpspnds.php for PSP but works with a X50/x51v At $35 bucks not bad and has Built in 1800mAh Li-ion battery... No adapter needed apparently. At the moment it is OOS...

It's kinda cool. I would use it to recharge my homebuilt external pack with it and use that to recharge the Axim. The "Science" in their ad is incorrect, though. I think they are talking about a 500mAh battery? Or does it push 500mA in full sunlight?

The built-in Li-ion in the Brando is a killer addition, but they aren't in stock!

I think the shipping from Hong Kong would be a lot steeper than from Vero Beach.

it would be more worthwhile if u can charge the axim while using it.

It's nice to know only for hickers....
Using it in your office it's kinda primitive since you can charge and use it with the craddle; a USB cable or a USB cable~110 Adapter.

That setting is ONLY good if you are hicking or camping.

I think many of you are missing the point here. mjs_28s is simply stating that he tried a solar charger and it works. If anyone wonders about wether or not it is possible to use a solar charger with the Axim, yes, it is possible, whatever the reason for using it. I, for one, am interested in that information. I don't care wether or not some other type of charger is better suited for a specific task. I alwats wondered is solar-powering an axim is really possible. Now I know.

If there is no thread about wether of not solar chargers are a good idea, or the many advantages of different types of charger, feel free to start one.
