Dial up from X51v
I was intrigued while visiting relations in Norway, to see them using a laptop with a normal mobile phone sim card in a card which fitted in the laptop card slot.

I was wondering whether anyone made a card which fitted the compact flash card slot on my x51v and would take a normal UK phone sim card?

Would it be worth me buying an extra pay as you go sim e.g. Easymobile who charge £3 per mb for GPRS or 3G?

Would I get satisfactory browsing on a train.

The main purpose would be online browsing of internet and googlemail. Possibly also SMS, Skype and maybe outgoing calls?

If you have a mobile phone with Bluetooth why not use it for your modem? It would be wireless and you wouldn't have to buy an additional component for your Axim.

I think this approach will allow you to have longer battery. CF Cards take a lot of power

To answer your question, yes, there are CF GSM/GPRS/EDGE cards available but they are pricey. You should also be aware that some cell providers require that you pay for a data plan (i.e., not just minutes) for Internet access. Alternatively, there are also CF dialup modems but of course you will need a dialup plan.

Moved to Accessories.

You are right, they do seem very expensive. Cheaper to buy a pay as you go mobile phone with blue tooth and use my existing sim

I wonder if anyone can help.

I recently acquired a CF modem for my x51v. The reason being that mobile browsing can be quite expensive in the UK as we don't have unlimited data plans, and there are times when using a cheap dial up modem would be better for me.

SO given that I have BT phone set up for certain occasions, I wanted to know how to instlal the CF card as it has no instructions.

It is a Compaq 56k modem.

When I put it in the CF slot the connections set up wizard comes up.

What settings do I need?

I entered the dial-up number, with "9" to preceed but am told I get no dial tone.

When I set up my mobile I had to change stop bits to 2 etc.

Any ideas?

sorry but I don't have an answer for you but I am curious to know why you bought a cf modem. I opted for using dialup with my x51v by dialing through my BT phone to my ISP dialup number. It worked fine if I remember correctly.

My phone doesn't have fax capability, but the modem does. Also an element of seeing what it does. Or if my phone is out ouf battery, or gets no signal - which happens at my sisters house.
