Battery Charger for Spare Battery
I am thinking of buying a spare battery for my X51v.

Are there any small portable charges which would charge a battery outside of the Axim which I could take on my travels with me instead of having to take the cradle?

I thought about doing that, but then thought if I was doing it day in day out then it could potentially induce wear into my Axim and maybe damage that.

Why can't you use the cradle ? - there is room for an extra battery ... at least on my (late) x50 cradle.

Cause I have my cradle all installed at work (cables going through the desk grommits, all hooked in the back etc.). I have a USB/AC travel charger for my Axim, but I also would love to have a spare charger (otherwise, you're tied to having your axim plugged in once it runs out). I've looked around, and nothing out there. Someone should make one (wink, wink).

I agree Edge, it would be very useful to be able to charge a battery outside of your Axim. Something small and portable would be great.

Only other option I can think of would be to spend $40 and buy a second cradle from Dell.

I want a solution for when travelling, so small and portable is essential. The cradle is just to big IMO to take with me.

Slightly off-topic now, but if I have a spare battery and charge it to 100% then store it. How quickly will it discharge itself with no use?

It should stay at 100% for a couple of days with no use just make sure no metal shorts across the contacts when storing it.

Keithmdw, I had a spare battery that I had partially charged and then stopped using. I took it out after months of sitting in a box and it was still right around the same charge that I left it. So, they seem to hold a charge pretty well.

15 days for X50v

it's around 15 days for X50v
you can safely take the battery out for X51v, you only lose time (can be fixed through async)
this may be hard to find a battery charger for X50/X51, because the charging cradle can also charge the battery
you may want to do this alternative way to X51v
it takes about 1-1/2 hours to charge from 10%-97%, after 97% the charging will slow down, then goes to standby when charging is finished (the power switch turns green)
here is the trick: use your axim itself as a charger
bring another AC adaptor (the AC adaptor for HP IPAQ or PSP is OK) and DC plug adaptor, charge the battery for about an hour if it's not fully run out (>20% remains, 1100mA/h); 1-1/2 hours for 1800mA/h
unplug the DC plug, the battery level should be around 97%, then you can replace the battery and charge another (if you have enough time before sleeping, you can charge couple more batteries)
if you have plenty of time, you can even wait till the battery fully charged

I do not believe your fears are well founded. I would not worry about it.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think I will just buy a second battery and use the Axim to charge it then.

Am I best buying a Dell-branded battery, or are ones on eBay any good?
