Wireless Hard Disk Enclosure...
Hi! Does anyone know if the Asus WL-HDD will work with an X51v?

I am sorely tempted to buy it because it would give a huge amount of storage but I would really prefer to know for sure that it works with my PDA.

Hello, i have one WL-HDD with a 40 GB disk working perfectly with my X50v. I can read, write, listen music, play games, view videos and more from the WIFI HDD. Even i can change the WL-HDD configuration from the IE. The transfer rate is very good for a 802.11b, i tested it with a mpg. video and there wasn't cuts or stops.

I don't know the X51v WIFI manager program, but i'm sure you will not have problems with the Asus WL-HDD.

Hi, Yes you can use it with no problemes. I've used one for more than a year now with my X50v.

I store primarily mediafiles on the WL-HDD, and use it as an wireless acc. point when on travell.

It is very easy to setup; but as standard it dos not setup any security, so at least I will recommend, that you setup and use MAC security (allow specifik MAC adr.).

Excellent news and great responses - thanks! I will now go and spend my money with confidence.

As an extra, I believe there is a USB port on the back of this enclosure does this mean you can expand the internal hard disk by adding flash cards, extra hard drives etc? Or am I just getting greedy?

As out-of-the-box, the USB connection can copy an USB-key to then buildin HD. But if You go to the Asus internetsite and download and install the newest driver for the WL-HDD, the USB connection can be used for a second HD - very nice. (you have to do some setup on the WL-HDD administrator pages, but no probleme)

I followed that up hoping for it to be another suitable device but found it is actually an Asus WL-HDD with a 40Gb disc in it. If you already have a 2.5" laptop IDE drive then this is not the cheapest place to go - you just want the enclosure - currently about £45+P&P. That said, this is quite a reasonable offer given that from what I have seen 40Gb is as big a disc you can put in this thing.

Disapointingly, the USB connection is only for plugging flash drives into it - and the functionality is to create a directory on the hard disc and copy the contents of the flash drive into it - cool if you don't want to have to boot/take your laptop just to make a backup of the pictures - but poor if you actually wanted it as a USB external disc too.

I also saw mention of a device called a WiDrive from EDS - looks like an even better solution but only available directly from them for $300+P&P (with a 40Gb disc). This is cool because it actually runs on batteries but it also does not thave the USB connectivity (and I don't think work want me to install a WiFi dongle onto my work pc yet:-)

So, I'm off the market until I see a reasonably priced WiDrive with USB connectivity (if they implement the auto backup stuff too I'll have that)

What was that? Oh a flying pig :-)

Still its been fun

Thanks everyone!

Oops! Sorry erlingt! I did not see your post regarding s/w upgrade - that is certainly worth knowing!

If only it could be used as a USB external drive for a pc and have a battery pack then I'd rush out and buy one :-)

Now you are being greedy

The USB is for connecting another storrage drive, not an PC. But you can with no problems connect your PC to the WL-HDD, and map it as a networkdrive.

Battery pack whould be fine, then it is a real portabel solotion. But why not make one yourself. The WL-HDD runs on 5V, so it should prety simple to make a pack with rechargeble batteries

Greedy? Well yes! But then I've been waiting for the Axim with the 5Mp camera and quad band phone and GPS for quite a while now so, actually, I'm not being _that_ demnding

The spare battery pack reminds me of the joke about the spiv selling the super watch. It does everything - finally the punter buys one and just as he's about to walk off with his new watch the spiv says "Don't forget your batteries!" (as he's holding two large suitcases).

I take your point though! There must be some form of portable power source out there to run the disk (and the pda whilst you're at it) whoa there! I'm getting greedy again!

Ahoy! I have a WL-HDD working with my X50/520. 60GB HDD installed. Unplugged, just hook up to it as an access point and it looks like a network drive. Check out MyPDA and Tips from the Trenches, link in my signature below. Note that I have been able to use my home-made 5VDC portable power supply with the WL-HDD.

Ahhhrrrrr!
