Are bluetooth keyboards allowed to be used on planes?

I recently took an airplane trip. They had the usual warnings....no electronic devices at all in use during takeoff and landings, no cell phone use, etc. They also said:

"NO BLUETOOTH MOUSE" use AT ANY TIME....takeoff, landing, or any time in between"

I would assume that would also apply to bluetooth keyboards. If so, then an IR keyboard is the only option.................does anyone out there know anything about this?

Thanks,

WOW, that's the first I have ever heard about BT restrictions. Did they say anything about BT headphones? I am curious as to why the restirction. BT generally has a very short range. I know there are some pilots that are AximSite members. Hopefully they can offer some insight. In the end, if it makes for a safer flight, then I am OK with it. Just my opinion.

Headphones on planes

In fact, the instructions did say that regular headphones could be used at any time, but headphones with noise reduction circuits could only be used above 10,000 feet. But that is true of all devices that might emit RF waves--just about ANYTHING electronic.

It didn't say anything about bluetooth headphones, but it is also possible that they just didn't consider them when they made the instructions. I AM pretty sure about the Bluetooth Mouse restrictions, though, and they have a VERY short range, so I'm still wondering about the Bluetooth keyboards.

It's possible that "you might not get caught" if you use a Bluetooth keyboard, but then again, do we want to risk a plane crash??

BT can work up to about 100'. So if a passenger is sitting in 1st class right near the front of the plane the signal will certainly make it to the avionics....

well first of all.... it is illegal to use an rf transmitting device on an aircraft in flight.

although.... it prolly would not hurt the aircraft, all cabples are sheilded and avionics are designed to withstand a certain amount of radio activity. and if a bt mouse say did screw with an aircrafts avionics i coild alkmost garentee the aircraft would not crash.

dont try it tho.

I've used mine, but I didn't know of such rules. Anyone find out specifically?

I was using my BT keyboard on a flight and whenever I hit the space bar the plane would suddenly lose altitude. I had a lot of fun flying the plane when I hit the control button. But as the pilot and attendants started heading my way I quickly hit the escape button! Although with that very cute flight attendant I did think of using my enter button...

This is also why I got the IR Keyboard. Previous threads have gone on in detail about the fact that bluetooth devices are not permitted to be active during the flight. While unlikely to cause any interference (don't some flights actually permit WiFi now?), it's against most airline regulations for RF transmission.

It's still illegal, though approval is pending in the eastern hemisphere. It's been pending for quite a while now. You'll notice that most carriers indicate that the customers don't want it, so the market may dry up at the company level, rather than the federal.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to undermine your point with that quote, I was just trying to point out, that the ban on RF devices on aircraft is as much to do with commercial interests as it is a safety comcern.

[edit] I just had to correct the button-generated quote which mis-quoted your name as bobthemad :)

One of our Aximsite regulars who is a pilot (althought I haven't seen him posting lately) posted this with regard to cell phone usage on planes.
