The site says its compatible with the x50. You should probably contact them to see if the x51 has ever been tested out. That's what I would do.
Let us know what you find out.
Well, now the site says nothing. Has Veo (which made the veo and hp sdio cameras) gone out of business? I'm considering getting an x51v, but I'd like to know if this camera will work with it.

So, according to that post, the x50v would be the one to get to work with this camera. The hp FA185A has worked fine over the years with my iPAQ 3850 (if 16000 photos on flickr are any proof).
I briefly tried upgrading to an iPAQ hx2410 (Windows Mobile 2003 SE) but the display in the photo taking application became choppier than I was used to on the 3850, so I returned it and got my 3850 repaired. The power button on the 3850 hasn't worked properly since, and the SD card reading has gotten pretty flaky, so I'm overdue for a new device. As long as I can keep taking pictures.
On an x50v, and hp's site said it supported 2002 and 03. But nothing about wm5, which is a very different of from 2003se. Best to check with hp on this one, or find somebody using it on wm5.

I contacted HP (in 2005) about the camera performing slow and choppy on my iPAQ hx2410 (compared to my WM2002 iPAQ 3850) and this is what they told me:

This is what veo (in 2005) said when I contacted them:

I never heard back whether such a driver materialized, but by that time I had switched back to the 3850 and the 2002 OS.
So hp washes its hands of the device and veo, the actual maker, seems to have vanished or gone out of business.
I just won a used x50v on ebay last night, so I'll be able to try it out soon. I have both the hp and veo versions of the camera (as a backup).
Okay, I just got an Axim X50, updated the ROM to A02(WM5) and now the HPPhotosmartSetup.exe installation file results in:
"Application Manager cannot install this application on your mobile device due to an invalid setup file.
Reinstall and try again."
Edit: same happens when I install veo_130s_install_ppc (Veo's driver).
Edit: same happens when I try to install tcpmp.pocketpc.0.72RC1.exe. ???
Edit: When I switched back to AS 4.5 (only possible with System Restore; reinstalling 4.5 normal resulted in inability to launch program), installation of mobile apps went smoothly without "invalid setup file" errors.
I've been able to run the hp sd camera on the ipaq 3850 (wm2003), Axim x50 (wm5) and ipaq hx2410 (wm2003). (Although the accompanying ipaq image zone app for viewing pictures will only work on ipaqs, which is fine since I can view pictures with other apps.) Hoping it will work on Axim x51v, but wondering how it will handle the VGA properties of the device.
Install the exe on your computer and it will place the cabs in /program files/microsoft activesync/ and there should be a folder with the software title containing the cab(s).
If you have vista or dont have a pc, then i can upload the cabs for you.

Thanks! It placed a "veosdiocam.arm.CAB" in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\HP Photosmart Mobile Camera" -- interesting that it retains it's Veo origins!
And the Axim x51v (wm5) does work with the hp photosmart mobile camera.
