Security for X50/X51
Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows what security measures I can take in the event of a theft, or if i simply misplace it. I hardly use my SD card slot, is there an SD Card that doubles up as a GPS Tracking unit? Or a GPS Transmitter small enough to embed into the ppc or case, so you can track your ppc street to street? or perhaps software that runs in the background and sends packets back to your main pc from its current location/ip address everytime it connects to wireless network?

Thanks for any replies.

Hi,

Not sure about a tracking software, but you may want to give my program Pocket Secure a try to lockdown and protect your data & files within!

You can check it out & download a trial Here!

I have seen some software for phones that phone to their prior address when the phone is used after SIM card is changed. But for PDAs your best bet is to at least lock the device and to put your name and phone number and something about a reward for return on the wake up screen.

Unfortunately, the odds are, if you lose the device the finder will keep it.
You can mitigate your chances of identity and data theft by encrypting all personal data on the unit through the use of available utilities.
You can also do as suggested above and offer a reward to a finder. But then how much of a reward will convince someone to return the unit?

Locking the unit with an application that will erase the unit after X number of bad unlock tries is another option but whatever is in the BIS will remain.

As for GPS tracking devices, the technology of James Bond hasn't made it to the size of a single SD card yet. Besides, it could be removed from the device.

There is a company that makes an application for laptops which causes them to phone home. It would be nice if they could port it to PDAs.

I have a device I use at airports. It is an alarm and a key fob. When armed, if the alarm and key fob get more than 20 feet or so apart the alarm goes off. Unfortunately, the alarm unit is about half the size of a pack of cigarettes, so it is not practical for a PDA.
