PSP Killer
I was checking ot the tech specs on PSP and everything for the most part about an X50V/X51V is better accept the controls. I was wondering if anyone knows of a thumbpad type accessory that is more of a gamepad. If so then why the heck aren't more people writing games for Pocket PCs? I could see the Pocket PC as a prefered alternative to a PSP for the same reason many users prefer a gaming PC to an Xbox or playstation aka they can do much of the same thing in the game arena but they can do so much more in other areas.

The axim justr doesnt have the "fell" of a gaming device. I think its b/c of its bad control buttons, and its default portrait design.

It would sure be nice to have a cradle type device that gave you gamepad controls and allowed you to carry the Axim in landscape mode.

has anyone thought of finding someway to hook a full sized game pad up to the ax? I know it's not exactly "portable" but you could put the ax in your lap and play games that way.

Yeah, I keep saying that, and I want to bust up a Belkin SnapNType and mate it with an old Sega Game Gear in a weird way so I can use the gamepad functions and dock with the Axim. Anybody want to buy me a SnapNType to do it with?

I suppose we could make a homegrown solution and try to port Xbox games or something but ultimately I want to understand why Dell and Microsoft sit back and watch PSP proliferate and don't offer an alternative? Axim VGAs have the hardware already in place save playable control either natively on the device or as an I/O cradle to snap the device into. Microsoft has to recognize the big drawback to PSPs compared to WM5 devices is that PSPs are NOT multifunctional... and so an Xbox launcher on WM5 VGA alternative to PSPs would be a pretty good leg up.

Its kind of aggrevating really.

I submitted Feedback to Dell and MS about a WM5 PSP alternative, MS replied with an autoreply canned responsed "your feedback is very important to us but we can't read everything". A Dell customer service rep replied with an actual response "I understand from your email that you wish to know more information
regarding..." and then said please go to the following URL for information on the subject and sent me a link to Blu Ray DVDs....

I didn't expect much but you never know.

Is there a working PSP emulator for WM? Is it even possible to emulate the PSP? Seems like that would be the best way to go about doing anything like this.

Yeah, I remember that. How about a wired version so you don't have to put up with the BT delay?

Interestingly, the Sega Dreamcast used Windows CE:

i think Virgin mobile came up with a phone and adaptor to play it like a game boy or something like that

its all about the OS... PS1 has a low spec... but all/most of its resources is dedicated to running the game

computers with WindowsXP might be able to emulate PS1 games, but it might be slower.... Windows sucks a lot of the power out...

similar thing with PocketPC... unless u want to install ur own custom OS onto ur axim...

i think emulating MAME games w/o lag would be achieved b4 PSP emulation...

Their are 2 seperate issues at hand then. The first is emulating the PSP (or MS making an official Xbox counterpart) to come up with a software platform. The second is a hardware solution that enables users to play games (D-pad and 4 buttons in current config isn't adequate for pan motions etc of complex games).

I think the industrious homebrew solutions posted in the thread above are great but I am no where near capable of putting something like that together. There is also the "Is that an axim mounted on a Playstation controller in your pocket or are you just ... " factor that kinda takes the pocket out of pocket PC. The hardware user interface on the PSP is pretty well done and I bet it can be approximated with a landscape orientation cradle that plugs into an expansion slot.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Chainpus BGP100 bluetooth gamepad. You can buy this now, it works with the Axim X50v and X51v, and people have tested it with games like Pocket SNES. Here's the original pocketnow.com review. The only issue is that the Axim doesn't fit perfectly in the controller, but hey, just prop up it up in a stand and then use the gamepad in your lap! Someone here hacked it to fit, but you do need some soldering skills.

Yeah, LAT linked to that earlier, or at least the front page article that linked to the original item.

edit: Hmm, I can get a Belkin SnapNType for X50 for $26.06 shipped at provantage.com. Interesting.
