Hi there. I'm looking to build a battery extender and I like the design by PocketBrain.

Would it be okay to use 14000mAh NiMH D cells, and what advantages/disadvantages could I expect from doing this? Can I connect just 5 cells in a series, since the voltage would be dropped down to 5 anyway?

Also, have you made any improvements to the design? I read the thread the original was posted in my there were many suggestions and I don't know which of them are beneficial
Thanks!

well, you can do the math yourself, but 5 cells would be 7.5 volts, you might do better to just use 4. also, you can buy a 4 cell AA battery extender at walmart for 10.00. as well as a bigger rechargable battery pack with a 3000mAH battery for about $30.00 at compusa.

doing it yourself is always more fun, but...

I use those same Energizer nimhs in my camera and they work great. However, while nimh's do discharge over time, and much faster than alkalines or nicad, using a "quick" charger will make things worse. The 15 minute and 1hour chargers don't do a very good job at all, and tend to kill the batteries too, making them less likely to hold a good charge for any length of time even if you later use a good charger. I picked up one of those 8 hours energizer chargers and things improved, but not much with the old batteries, a new set of batteries though and that charger made a HUGE difference. I went from batteries that held a charge for a week on the outside, to ones that last a minimum of a month. Although after a month, while it would still power my camera, there is no telling if it would still power your axim. Although a set of 4 still power my husband's camera and it's WAY power hungry.

Anyway, that's been my experience with cameras, but I don't have one of those extenders so I can't really apply that info to it directly.
