Cool Wifi tool
Hi , I'm new to the site, Well not really that new, I've been lurking for about a month now picking up on cool things to do with my X51v That I bought last month.

Any how , I've been using an Asus WL-HDD with an 80g 2.5 Hard drive and think it has been working very well.

http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?l...&modelmen u=1

I have all my music on the Hard drive and quite a few movies, the TCPMP interface has been very good at letting me access all of the media content from this device.

I have also made my own powersupply for the Asus WL-HDD by taking 3x4 AA battery cases and hooking them up in parallel (4 1.2v AA rechargeable batteries 2700mah in series x 3 cases=4.8v 8100mah) theoretically this should give me 4 hours of power for the HD.

This combo makes my X51v a match for many laptops and can fit in my pocket.

Does anyone know of a possible Web browser that would let me access my WL-HDD configuration utility from my X51v?

I cant wait till I can get ahold of a good sized 2.5" flash drive that will help me extend my adhoc powersupply for the WL-HDD

Hello!

Have you already tried the standard Mobile Internet Explorer? From my experience I can say that I cannot access my router configuration page. There are certainly a few alternatives like Opera, Netfront, Thunderhawk,... but none of them is free.

A few month ago, I was looking for a free browser, but found none that is worth to be mentioned. The best one I tried, was Netfront, but unfortunately, it was limited to 30 days for trial. And since I don't want to spend money at the moment for a browser, I am using the slow and unconvenient Internet Explorer. So, I would recommend tou to try the 3 browsers I mentioned before, and to take one of them if you are ready to spend some cash.

So, if anybody knows a free useful browser, could he tell me?

I have a question to Torino10: How can you access the data on the hard drive using your PDA? Only using a web browser, or is it possible to use FTP access or to map it as a drive like an SD or CF card?

I just set up my wireless network, and while connected to the network, was able to map my PC shared documents via Resco Explorer 2005 - Menu - File - Network - Map Drive....

Is it possible to establish an ad-hoc conenction between the PDA and the hard drive? For example to use in the following scenario: Wireless hard drive in the back of the car, and access the hard drive via the PDA sitting on the front passenger seat of the car? Or is an accesspoint-hardware needed?

The device I got is a network assosciated hard drive and I was able to access it with file explorer just by typing the partition address into the address bar.
Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work with PIE for the configuration utility.

The TCPMP for Pocket PC has an address bar for when your looking for media and does the job just fine, The WL-HDD2.5 is smaller than a VHS Cassette (My adhoc Battery pack, which is highly NOT recommended by ASUS, takes up more space.)

It is also great for bringing movies and media to a friends house and if they have wireless all you gotta do is plug in the power

I was wondering...is it worth going through all the trouble when there are iPod interfaces for car stereos and some that take a hard drive? I mean...you can put any media on a hard drive and connect it to a car stereo with a screen. Then you can use your axim for satellite navigation and such. I'm not criticizing, I'm just wondering the reasoning behind wanting the axim to be connected to the hard drive in the car.

My axim is connected to the hard drive when ever it is convienent, in the car this gives me access to all my music and a number of movies, I do not own an Ipod, but my car stereo does have a stereo input jack that would work as an input for anything with an audio out, as far as CF and 4gb SD cards go, yes they are very excellent, often I download a large playlist from my HD to my CF card, but I like the fact that I can have upto a 200gb hard drive in my coat pocket that I can access with my Axim51v in my other coat pocket.

Also the powersupply for the Asus WL-HDD is fully capable of running the Axim51v(not sure about recharging yet but gonna try it and see)

Hey all - just got my own X51V two weeks ago & this is my first post.

I had basically the same idea and it was one of the reasons I got my Axim, so I ordered an Asus WL-700GE wireless router / network storage device, which I intend on stuffing under my car seat and then using the Axim as a movie & MP3 player (basically a carputer). It has a 3.5" 160GB Hitachi pre-installed but you can put whatever you want in it. It also runs on Linux and has a bunch of extra features, including BitTorrent capability and a USB port that can accept external hard drives, printers, or USB Keydrives amongst other things. A new deck with a built-in hard drive would cost me well over $1000 (I'm in Canada BTW) and would be far less versatile, so it makes more sense for me to spend $250 on the Asus to use with my existing setup which serves me fine. And I can always unplug the router and have ALL my music and movies literally anywhere I go.

As far as CF cards go, I've got a Seagate 8GB Microdrive (which works great except in one of my cardreaders) but it's simply not enough space for my music - it doesn't even hold near 1/10th of what I've got. Fine for daytrips, but no good for a car collection. And as big and fast as CF cards are getting, they're still a pain to empty and refill with new content all the time. By the way, if you look on Ebay you can find Sandisk Extreme 16GB CF cards in the $300-$400 range, and I've heard that 32GBs exist but aren't in the public market yet. It's nuts - I paid $150 for a 2GB Extreme III a year ago, and I only paid $130 for the 8GB Microdrive.

Sorry to ramble, but this was my big idea for my Axim, so I'm glad to see that other people have had luck doing the same - I never really researched the possibilities, I just kinda assumed (or hoped) it would work.

Hi!

My opinion is that memory cards with a big capacity are not really future proof and that their are as expensive as bigger hard drives. And I think it is simply cool to build crazy thinks into a car ;-)
