Seeking battery extender advice

Yeah, I know it's been beaten to death, but I still can't get a straight answer as to a working and SAFE battery extender for my x51v.

At the moment I have 4 brand new "high performance" ni-mh AA batteries. I can't remember their specs offhand, but when I bought them, they were *specifically* to meet the requirements of a home made battery extender on this site. I also have an enclosure from Radio Shack. According to the article I read, this was all I needed to make a safe and usable extender for my Axim.

My problem now is, I've gone over some mewer posts here on the site, and I am worried that what I have is not safe to pump power into my now-discontinued PPC. One of the other articles mentioned a switching regulator, but someone that replied to his post mentioned 5 rechargable batteries instead of 4, now I'm even more confused.

Eventually, I plan on getting the 3300mAh Mugen battery, so I may not need the battery extender in a few months... But until then, I am stuck with the stock 1100mAh battery, and it does NOT cut it for my day-to-day activities (I spend much of my work time with wifi enabled, and DAMN it eats power!).

So, basically I have:
4x 1.2v NiMh rechargable batteries rated at 2500mAh
1x battery enclosure
1x DC plug to fit the Axim plug (which, btw, I might need to find a replacement for, since I lost it)

Can I go ahead and use the pack with my Axim and not risk frying it? (correct polarity, of course).

Lyc

I fried a Mio 336 that way. I gave exactly the same voltage that the charger gives it, right to the same pins. Correct polarity, of course.

Which Radio Shack battery extender do you have? If it charges via USB, you should be ok, as those are meant to be general-purpose. Also, if your NiMH batteries are Energizer e2's, they will self-discharge very quickly (speaking from experience). I now use Sanyo Eneloops.

As mentioned in my first post, it's one I made (err, am making) that involves 4x rechargable AA batteries and a battery enclosure. It's home made, not a premade storebought thing. :)
