Setup problem - can't connect to internet
Hi,

Just purchased my first Axim (51v), but cannot get it to see the internet via my Sky Netgear router. The Axim can see the router but when i try to access a website I am told it can't see it. I gues (know) I must have done something wroong when setting the function up, but can't see what!
Can anyone please suggest what I need to do?
I suspect that there may be an IP adress conflict, but that's only a guess.

Cheers

Peter

What do you mean that you are told "it can't see it". What error exactly are you getting? Can you access the LAN? Can you access, for instance, the router's control panel via the Axim?

From the WiFi Guide
Quote:
Cannot Connect with Current Settings: In the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Advanced (tab), Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both of the pull down lists. If you then tap the Edit... button under either list and the Proxy Settings (tab), the top box (This network connects to the Internet) should be checked but leave everything else on this page blank. After tapping OK, make sure both dropdown lists are still set to My Work Network and OK your way back to the Today page and then soft reset.

I usually get that when I'm out of range of the router. Settings issues (ie, WEP) give a different message. Try ikehiker's suggestion and report back. Let us know if you've get WEP or any other security measures present.

Ike & Dotan

Thanks very much for your replies. I did what you suggested Ike and under the advanced settings tab set both to My Work network (one was showing My ISP) and went back and did a soft reset.
Before this point I noticed that the Axim wasn’t connecting properly with the router – it was as if it was continually hunting, i.e. now it saw the router, now it didn’t – I wasn’t getting a constant connection – the above failed to clear this, so what I did was go into the Dell WLAN utility icon and then into the Dell Axim X51 adapter and click the “use server-assigned IP address” radio button – I now have a constant network connection (apparently) to the router. I’ve just spotted that in the IP address box adjacent to the “use specific IP address” radio button, the IP address has changed from 192.168.0.6 to what appears to me to be some sort of hex figure.
However, when I try and connect to a website (I always try the same address - http://news.bbc.co.uk/) I’m back where I started, with the original error message! I am also unable to ping 192.168.0.1.
The router tells me that “WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)” security is set up and that the Wireless Access Point is enabled and that Broadcast of name (SSID) is permitted.

The hex type key in the IP field is IP6 which I do not believe is supported on the Axim. If your router is 802.11G, is it set to mixed mode? If you have security set on the router, try disabling it temporarily.

Check the Troubleshooting section of the WiFi Guide for more possible solutions.
