Just wanted to give an update on the
Logitech FreePulse headphones, which I settled on. I've had 3 days to listen to my podcasts and music. The headphones come with a fairly compact transmitter, but I primarily wanted to pair them with my Axim.
Aesthetics: 10
I was not prepared for how compact and awesome-looking these headphones are. Despite being over-the-ear, they are barely bigger than my ears, very light, and quite unobtrusive. Unlike the Leia buns on other over-the-ear headphones, it's tough to tell you even have headphones on!
Pairing and Sound Quality: 10
These easily paired with my Axim X50v on WM5 with the
Widcomm Bluetooth stack 0.5 and
setting FlowControl to 0. Sound quality was phenomenal! I encountered none of the whine, clicks, or pauses that have been well documented here and in other forums. Quiet passages in classical music were dead silent. Also, I could definitely feel the bass in these headphones--more so than in my old Logitech's.
Comfort: 6
Alas, the reviewers on Amazon weren't kidding when they said these were only comfortable for an hour! It took me half a minute to figure out how to even put them on, as the right way feels like they're upside-down. Also, the non-adjustable band is shorter than the one in my original Logitech's and sits close to the neck. The rubber ear loops have a very snug fit--you could probably do floor gymnastics without the headphones falling off! Unfortunately, at least for me, the snug fit hurt my ears after about an hour. Eventually, I got used to them. Also, it's possible to wear them with the ear loops off the ear if you're not moving much. Durability remains to be seen. But unlike the brittle band in the first generation Logitech's, the carbon steel elastic band on the FreePulse is quite rugged.
Conclusion
I believe I made the best choice in a new pair of Bluetooth headphones. Despite being out for a year, the FreePulse pairs fine with my Axim and sounds outstanding with no pops or delays! I believe the Widcomm driver deserves the credit. I'm not sure how it would perform with an X50v with WM 2003SE so be forewarned.
