A couple of X51v accessory questions (but one thread!)
Hey all,

Absolutely loving the axim, but I have a couple of questions about accessories for it:

1) Anyone able to recommend me a case which allows for use without removal, but also allows for horizontal belt mounting? I was looking at something like the Krusell cases, but couldn't work out if they were designed to sit horizontally, or to 'self right' as it were.

2) Compact Flash USB Host cards. Has anyone had any experience with these and 3g usb adapters? If not, has anyone tried (or even found) a CF 3g adapter? I'm curious as I might be getting a free 3g adapter for USB, and might want to make it work with the axim in the rare locations (like most of where I go) that I don't have access to a wifi point!

3) Bluetooth GPS. Anyone found decent GPS mapping software that is /not/ just for drivers, such as software for mapping out terrain etc? I'm asking as I do a lot of hiking and might wish to utilise my axim with a GPS module (assuming I can find one for it and the right software).

Your thoughts, as always, are welcomed and greatly appreciated!

For the case you described, I would suggest looking at the Sena line. I believe that Aximcases carry this line. You can google Sena as well.

You did not mention extra batteries. Most of us have one or more of the extended units from Dell or Mugen. Factor the extra size of these batteries in your case decision.

Don-t know much about the storage cards. I'm sure someone will be of help.

I have the Tom Tom Navigator 6 GPS system and use it daily; love it.

Good luck and welcome to Aximsite.

Thanks for that... The reason I didn't mention batteries is because I have both normal /and/ extended batteries, I tend to use the normal one for daily use and the extended ones when I'm out and about for long periods of time!

I've looked all through the aximcases site, but couldn't find anything which stated it could be held horizontally on a belt, yet still used in the case...

Anyone have any personal experience with this?

Have you though about a combined solution?

You could use a Pdair aluminum case for X51v with the extended battery, which also holds the Axim securly when using the standard battery. Get it without the belt clip. Then find an over-sized case that attaches to your belt horizontaly, that fits the Axim while it is in the Pdair case.

Now you have your Axim protected while using either battery, and doubly protected when it's on your belt.

You could probably find a camera case that would work.

As for the GPS software, search the forums, I think Grid Hiker and Noni GPS Plot might work, and I think both are free.

Also search the forums for ''Axim sleeve", I think a CF USB host adapter was used in that project.

Hope this helps!

My Bad!
My bad! That was supposed to be "Axim Jacket", not 'sleeve'.

Anyway, here's the thread: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/x50-x51-forums/135453-finished-my-jacket-vga-rs232-usb-hub-car-charger-audio-preamp-must-see.html

Ah, the Aximiser... Seen that thread.

Wasn't sure if his USB Host card would work with a 3G card though, hence the question! The card needs to be powered from USB...

Failing that, a 3G CF card?

I'm liking the suggestion on the case front... How securely does the ally case hold a standard batteried axim?

I'll check the GPS software out (and get a GPS adapter obviously!!!).

I remember discussing the aluminum cases before, and was told that the case grabs the Axim by wrapping around the sides of the unit. That user said he used it with both batteries regularly.

Look at the pictures on AximCases' website.

Also found a horizontal Axim case that might work for you.

I saw that horizontal case, but it looks like you have to remove the axim for use?

Might work if I keep the axim in another case inside of it though...

That pdair looks great... how did I miss it before?

Now to secure funds and go buy something!!!

Oh, and it's looking like CF 3G/HSDPA cards are VERY rare, if not almost extinct!!!

Fortunately, I keep everything on my belt, and am aware of everything's locations at all times!!! It suddenly feels weird if I don't have my phone on my belt, and that's usually because I've taken it off to make a call!!!

Are you sure you want BT for hiking? I bought the Holux GR-271 CF card with iGuidance for the road and Memory-Map Navigator for off the road. All works great for me.

Hey, mAXIMum Dude, can you expand on "Grid Hiker"? I found Noni GPSPlot, and I've experimented with MemoryMap Navigator, I finally bought Backcountry Navigator, but I can't find anything called Grid Hiker.

I'm not particularly bothered on the interface it uses, but was thinking of possibly using it on the motorbike as well as a sat nav... Obviously I'd need different software for that, but hey

Sure! I accidentally inserted a space in the name. Here is the link.

BTW: I usually find most of my apps through one of these PPC freeware sites:
They mostly duplicate each other's library, but each one has it's own style of indexing the programs.

Have fun!
