The USB host cards do work but they are only 1.1 specs and they don't have drivers for all applications. They also drain quite a lot of power.
The U727 looks like a very interesting device but it may not work with USB 1.1 or you may not be able to get drivers for the host card for it. Power drain would probably be an issue as well.
I may be wrong, but I don't think a PPC would be able to run the required software for this to function properly.
Nice idea though, if you try it, let us know how it works.
