Axim Stand

I use my Axim X51 mainly for movies/games and after holding it for an hour or so, my hands would always go numb. SO i decided to build an Axim Stand. :) This is the prototype, my very 1st attempt, so please be gentle lol There is a battery pack in the mail, it will be attached when it arrives.

Here's a few during construction pics and a couple final pics.

I have ALOT more pics, anyone that wants to see them let me know and I'll send em to you. Heating/Bending plexiglass over your kitchen stove isn't the best way to do this, but it IS the cheapest =)

Very impressive! I think you did an awesome job. Where do you get plexiglass and how do you bend it?

Cool

Thanks stevenator65. I bought the plexiglass at the local Home Depot for $10, and you can bend it by VERY CAREFULLY heating it over a burner on your kitchen stove. Keep the glass there too long and its goes as limp as a noodle, get it too close to the heat and it starts to bubble (like it did on me 3 times, have to look closely at the pics to see it) In short it serves my purposes for now, i'll probably attempt another model when i get a chance, probably after my back-up battery pack comes.

I uploaded a couple more pics for those of you interested in the bending/shaping/melting process. I'm thinking of making another one, with a drawer on the bottom to store accessories in. :) I watched a movie today, and the stand was a big success.

Looks cool. I have been planning to make one of these for my tablet. Thanks for the info... btw, it's in the trenches.

I like it but does it have an attachment or something that holds it into place? If not you should think about adding it. Great idea keep on thinking!!

I applaud your ingenuity. I'm not sure I could have made that without a lot of cursing and much blood shed (usually my own :)).

One question for you though: why not just use the cradle that it came with? After looking at the pics it look like you are using it in the same way that a cradle would be used.

That's really cool! From the previous posts you mentioned that you used the kitchen stove element to heat the plexiglass. I imagine it would work if you had a portable mini propane torch right? Would the heat be too intense and focused to get across the width, thus ending up with bubbling? Clearly I'm not the super handy man here :)

But that's a great idea and I may add this to the pile of projects I have already!

To ScratchyPDX - I'm attempting to make a portable stand that i can take around the house with me. The cradle is hooked to the computer, and it doesn't support landscape mode anyway. :)

amixdakine - the Axim is just resting on there..and not very securely either. I do have plans on making a new stand, one with a drawer to hold all the extra goodies and hold the Axim from falling.

Xealot - I didn't have a propane torch and didn't want to spend the cash on it (Though I might for the next stand) The oven was cheap (free) and it worked. But you certainly have to watch the bubbles, I ended up with 2 or 3 bubbly spots.

First off- Great idea and good job!

I'm wondering if a heat gun would work better and help prevent bubbles. Harbor Freight has them for around $20 regular price or $10 on sale. It seems the heat wouldn't be quite as concentrated as an open flame. Just a thought.
