Car Charger Recommendations

Hello,

I purchased an x50/51 car charger from buyGPSnow (a site which I normally love) about a year and a half ago. I have had ongoing problems with the power cutting in and out even though the LED indicator on the charger itself is always on.

I want to purchase another one, but don't want to end up with another dud.

I really like chargers by iGo, but they don't make the Axim tip any longer.

Does anyone have a particular brand of curly cord style car charger for their Ax that you would recommend?

Thanks Alot!

The problem is, (So I've been told) most of the chargers circuits were designed for other models or devices. Though they have enough current to charge the battery, they can't provide enough to run the device at the same time. So, the backlight cuts in and out as the power supply fluctuates, turning on and off the battery power. It would be nice if places mentioned little tidbits like that before selling you the item, but disclosure doesn't appear to be the name of the game. I don't think I've seen anything but the original power supply actually work with the AximX51v turned on.

Take a look at this thread. I purchased the Belkin 3-in-1 travel kit and it provides more than enough power to charge my pda with it on and in heavy use. They are really hard to find now- I got mine at Buy.com about 8 months ago, but they no longer have them. I just did a Google search for them and a few showed up. I used mine every day while on a 2 week business trip and it worked fantastic. I still use the USB to pda cord (connected to my pc) so I don't have to use the cradle. It also charges my pda while on- I use it on a daily basis.

Are you using an X51v? I think I have the same kit and still get problems with the backlight cutting in and out. I was told the VGA display on the X51v draws a lot of power. Maybe I'm wrong and there's something else amiss?

I bought a car charger for the Sony PSP. These are generally easier to find and cheaper than Axim-specific products. The flat Axim adapter plugs right into the round plug of the adapter.

You can find an adapter at electronics/game stores.

That's the one I bought and it works great. I think I paid a little less than $20 for it.

Yep, x51v. It's always charged mine while on and in use from the 120v outlet or the USB to pc connection.
