I have an x51 and have tried to get a replacement adapter connector and dell says they no longer have that part. Does anyone know where i can buy 1 I have looked everywhere.

Semsons also has them: Charger Adapter for Dell Axim X50/X50v Handhelds (the X51/X51v has the same configuration in the port so this part also works with them).

For the record, I always had above average (dare I say excellent) and always prompt service from Dell when I spent 6 months warranty replacing 400 Axim handhelds.

San Salvador was always easier than India, so I tried to call in the morning, rather than evening when calls went south instead of east.

HTC may have been a good source, or a distributor of HTC components. Since they manufactured the Axim's for Dell.

I second getting a charger adapter from Semson. I had two Dell OEM adapters fall apart. They are junk! It is probably a good thing that Dell no longer has any to sell.

Is this an adapter for some type of AC output or can this plug directly into a cigarette lighter?

It's the end piece for the AC.
It allows you to connect the AC cord from your cradle directly to the Ax.

Many cigarette-lighter adapters have the same type of tip as the AC adapter, so these plug adapters from Semsons will work with them.
