X51v CF speed question

How fast can the Axim X51v access data using the CF card slot?

Newegg has 3 different 32GB CF cards available. The fastest (RiData) costs $106 and is rated at 233x.

There is an A-Data (on the compatibility list) for $68, but there is not a speed listed. (Very tempting!)

The Transcend runs at 133x and is $95.

Will the Axim X51v be able to utilize the 233x speed of the RiData CF card? (If not, then the extra $38 will be a waste).

I searched the forums and found an old thread that referenced the x50 and the author claimed that the speed of the card didn't matter to the Axim. Presumably, because the Axim couldn't access the data fast enough to reach the full capacity of the CF cards.

Unfortunately, the documentation from Dell is somewhat lacking and I couldn't find any other information regarding the X51v memory access speeds for the CF card slot.

Any information would be appreciated.

The extra speed is pretty much useless when the card is in the Ax.
It only reads and writes at it's own pace.

Speed is important for cameras etc

A faster card will be faster in a Card Reader.

You will find more info in the Storage Card Forum, including a sticky thread about compatible cards.

Thanks for all the links. Good stuff.
I wonder if the Dell site has any technical data on the CF Card transfer rate?

CF Size

Normal CF carsds dont fill the void in the Axim x51v. I got an 8g micro drive CFII but the ax does not see it. I can see it on my comuter thru a reader but not on the ax. Will a Bios upgrade help???

According to SKLite benchmark my AX51v accesses the CF card
at:
1-Write 427.3 KB/sec.
2-Read 1556.63 KB/sec.

Given those measurements and that most CFs are measured in MB/sec as in 20+MBs then it appears the speed of the CF card doesn't really matter as all that I've seen (perhaps not older ones) appear to be a lot faster than the Axim access speeds. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Funny thing, I was just looking for this info today as I was looking for a 16gb or 32gb card for my x50v.

Do not pay the extra money for the high speed cards because it is a waste of your money. The axim controls the speed. The only benefit would be copying files using a card reader but still it not worth it.

I bought a standard 4 GB SD card (Sandisk) for my X51v (was running out of room on the 2 GB), BUT, my PDA won't read the card! I upgraded to the latest Mobile 5 ROM, but still no cigar.
WHAZZUP? Help? Advice?
Thanx. LongJnSilver

Well the first thing to do is to format the sd in 32 bit format using
a card reader. If that fails then you may have in reality a SDHC 4gb
which the AX 51v won't read or write unless your are using one of the
WM 6 variety of roms around on the net.You could however install
the SDHC driver and it will work with stock 51v/WM5 follow this:

SDHC driver for original aku 2.3.1 ROM
