X50v - How big is the extended battery?

I was just kindly told that my extended battery will not fit in the aluminum case I ordered.

Should I...

Ditch the extended battery? Ditch the case? If so, which will keep my PDA clean and safe, and still hold the battery? What does the aluminum case I ordered look like, anyhow?

I think if you want a case it would probably be best to either get a spare standard battery or wait for Mugen to release a larger capacity standard-size battery. Note that the second option could take as long as four months, however.

I've said this before, but I'll mention it again for those that don't know...

Rather than drop $100 on an extended battery, why not get one of those "Battery Extender" devices on ebay for $10? Many people don't actually need an extended battery, they just want to use their PDA for long periods on certain occasions (e.g. during a long flight). These battery extenders plug into the cradle connector on the bottom of the PDA and hold four AA batteries, like this one for the X30:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...725853105&rd=1

You can buy yourself a pack of twenty 2250 mAH NiMH AA batteries for about $25 online. Four of these batteries supplies more juice than the X50 high-capacity battery. Then you can have the equivalent of FIVE extra high-capacity batteries for long trips, at the cost of a little extra bulk and weight.

(Remember that mAH ratings don't add, i.e. four 2250 mah AA batteries does not equal a 9000 mah battery, they equal a 2250 mah battery that supplies 6V. It's really better to think in terms of watt-hours rather than mah, because mah alone does not tell the whole story).

I agree. I had one for my Garmin PDA. Worked great and only used when I needed to hike with the pda. For everyday use I didn't need it. However, the NMH AA batteries will loose a charge fast. I kept a set of Duracell in the package in the truck of my car untill I needed them, which wasn't too often. also works great for the forementioned 4+ hour flights and terminal time.

Well to be honest I haven't used one, but based purely on battery capacity ratings, four AA batteries is much greater than the X50's li-poly battery.

There might be some inefficiencies introduced because the main battery is also being charged by the battery extender, but I doubt this has a big effect.

I always wondered what those "battery extenders" were that I saw on Ebay... they never had a picture of them and the description was either crytic or completely absent.

I too would like to know if anyone has had any experience with these "battery extenders".

Thanks in advance. :approve:

I bought the 1100 as an extra battery rather than get the 2200 and have to worry about fitting the case.

Do these units charge the Axim batteries or run the device off the AA batteries? Or both?

Both. If you run the axim while it's plugged in it wont charge. If you leave the axim off, it will charge.
