A simple AC adapter cord....

Hate to rant over a brand new device but......

How is it that you cannot purchase an extra AC adapter from Dell without having to buy an entire cradle ($45). This makes noooooo sense to me.

C'mon Dell, I don't use the cradle I already have other than creating the initial sync partnership and to charge the spare battery. It's much easier and faster to sync wirelessly.

Guess I'll look for a battery extender instead. Anyone know of one that works on the X50??

I think you can order the travel charger for the x5 and it will work on the x50. All the chargers
are basically the same.

Thanks.

Would be helpful if the folks at Dell sales knew that.

AC Adaptor

I just spent several hours looking into this same situation. I found that the AC Adaptor used on the MP3 player is the exact item. Dell part# is 310-5864. Good luck. :rolling:

The Axim likes 2400MaH output, go lower than that and it will take longer to charge.

Using a standard wall wart (like from WalMart), could conceivably discharge your battery much as a USB Sync/charge cable can do if your battery is too low.

Radio Shack now has some higher output models available, and this one will do the job, probably still a bit slower than the Dell, but it would get the job done.

4.5V/1600mA AC-to-DC Power Adapter

Just take your Axim with you and they will have an "AdaptaPlug" to fit the DC Input socket. Make sure you get the polarity right!!

(Something to remember when shopping for chargers: Never go to a Higher Voltage, higher Amps, MiliAmps and MaH is OK, as the device will only draw as much as it needs.........But a Higher Voltage can fry your device in a nanosecond........a LITTLE BIT Lower Voltage will just take a bit longer..........TOO much lower and it just won't do anything much at all).

Plenty of adaptors available on ebay

There are plenty of dell ac adaptors available on ebay, ranging from 14.95 - 19.95 plus shipping. Read the listing carefully as not all include the power cord to plug into the ac socket!

I don't think that will work. The threshold for the Axim seems to be very close to 5.0 v. I tried a 5v, 850 mA on a fully charged X50 with a GPS unit and it kept flickering as the voltage dropped below 5. At 4.5v I don't think that one will be recognized by the Ax at all.

I ended up using the AC Adaptor from my iPaq h2215, just changed out the adaptor, and it works fine (cigarette lighter adaptor too).

I tried to order a 2nd adaptor from Dell today, but waited >30mins for Sales Support before I finally hung up the phone.

TO BOOT: Why does the Dell Travel Sync cable require an AC ADAPTOR??? Can it not run off the USB power (like the iPaq) to charge and sync at the same time, or is this some chintzy marketing scheme to force us to buy an ADDITIONAL cable for $30?

You are right.. the travel cable WON'T charge without the ac adaptor. It is odd that the Cradle will charge without the adapter but not the other way around. Not sure why.

OK, so I THOUGHT I remembered the cradle providing recharge via USB, but I JUST VERIFIED it through a number of USB ports on my PC, and NO JUICE!! UGH!!

1. USB 1.1 on the motherboard - no charge
2. USB 2.0 PCI card - no charge
3. USB 2.0 Powered Hub - no charge

Now time to crawl back under my desk and hook everything back :realmad:
