x50v as my GSM CELL PHONE?
Hi...
I searched a lot for this and still can't get a good answer. Is there a way to use my x50v as a GSM cell phone, with my SIM card? The only adapter I could find info about implied that I use wired phone/microphone piece, AND it seemed a little bulky. Is there a newer/better adapter anywhere in the world? Is there a chance of one being released soon?
Thanks!

I didn't go through the same company as kaangun's link, but I bought the same CF adapter for my X5 and now I'm using it with my X50v. It uses a headset that plugs directly into the card (earpiece/microphone) which really isn't any different than a hands free headset you could buy for a regular mobile phone. You do HAVE to use this though because of (from what I was told) the Pocket PC's lack of full dubplex with the speaker and mic. It was like that for the X5 anyway and I haven't tried it any differently with the X50v.

It's certainly not the cheapest thing going, but I was never really going to carry a phone unless it was somehow part of my PPC.

It does use a SIM card, my plan is with T-Mobile.

I haven't done a scientific test for this and I don't talk all that much on the phone, so it's hard for me to say. The software that came with mine allows you to turn the screen off while you're talking or just leaving it ready to answer calls, so that does save the battery some. I can say that when I leave it in this state (screen off ready to receive) on my 45 minute commute it loses 5-7% with the standard battery.

Wow.... 5-7% in 45 minutes with the screen off? Wouldn't even last one day on standby. Any measures on talk time?

Thanks

I was interested in the same thing a while back when I was looking at either an iPAQ or the x50 (I went x50) and I came across this article.

Lots of detail and a good starting point...

I've never really done any tests on talk time, but when I plan on using it as a phone on a given day I usually use the extended battery that day. I'm also never far from a power source, so there have been days I've had it on all day, but when I was at my desk at work it was plugged in and charging. On it's own it seems clear that the regular battery wouldn't last all day, but the extended may be close. When Mugen releases their batteries for the X50 series their extended one should be even better.

For my purposes it works just fine as a phone. I'm not a big phone user, but I always have my PPC with me so I'd find that I wouldn't carry my regular mobile phone with me or think to even have it on half the time.

Honestly I use it more for dial-up internet connection. Obviously it's not as fast as connecting with wifi, but I also don't have to worry about being able to find a network and can dial in anywhere I can get a phone signal.

It might seem like a lot of money to spend for someone who doesn't use the phone that much, but considering I never used the regular mobile phone I had, that was a TOTAL waste, so I figure I'm ahead of the game.

If I get a chance this weekend I'll try to take some pictures of it and post them here.

One other thing I should mention is that I went this route instead of the Smartphone PPCs because for me the PPC functionality was the primary concern, so I didn't want to scale back on that end in order to have phone capabilities too.

I have Sprint PCS.

I'm not too technical so if anyone could help I would like
to know if this would work for me and Sprint. I'm a
casual phone user and would love to dump my phone for
this solution.

Please let me know and thanks in advance.

They're coming. Just can't confirm when! I think Manfred is getting tired of my emails asking when we will get them.

I'll let you know when they are available!
