Do they make non-protruding wi-fi cards?
I've noticed that every SD or CF card that enables wireless seems to be larger than ordinary. Do they make any that aren't longer and therefore won't stick out of the pda making it more vulnerable to damage? Also anyone know how long before they release an 802.11g card?

You'd prolly lose range.

You don't want protrusion.........get WiFi Built-in, most have an extended internal antenna.

Most current PPCs don't support "g".

I wasn't recommending it - in fact, I generally don't care for Linksys equipment. I was merely showing its existence as an 802.11g CF card.

Have you tried it? According to their website it's up to 350mAh TX peak and 270mAh RX peak. Which makes it one of the thirstier cards around but I wouldn't say it was an obscene amount of juice. But in real life it could be very different...

Regardless, the PPC cannot handle the throughput of 802.11g so there are very few times when you'd get any benefit from it.

We did some testing with them for a possible solution for one of the projets we are working on but found that the powerdrain was fairly signifigant vs the benefit anyway. Its not going to drain your battery in 30 minutes or anything but we found a 10-15% difference in run time using them vs the linksys and symbol b cf cards. It really depended on the device though, we tested on two models of Ipaq and the Dell x5 at the time.

Throughput was the man reason we decided to go with the regular ol b models. The difference in transfer rates was fairly minimal in fact the orinoco gold b system we tested with beat out the linksys g consistantly. It didnt really make much sense but we just chalked it up to overhead plus the bus limitation of cf interfaces in pocket pc's. It appeared to us anyway that the pocket pc was more of a bottleneck than the wifi card itself.

Of course the main benefit of running a G on your PPC is so you can run a pure G network. Even that will only be of use to only a very few home users since broadband connections are slower than B and in my experience, few people do that much transfering between their networked computers.

Awesome, thanks Grape.

Have you heard of any other vendors working on G cards?
