X50v RS232 connection possible...on the cheap side?
I've got a couple of links to CF card to RS232 adapters...for over $100USD.

But...does anybody know of a decent way to get an RS232 port (whether it be fully RS232c voltage compliant or not, it doesn't matter) on the cheaper side of $100?
I do some remote datalogging/collection/control over a serial port and now that I've got an x50v, carrying the x50v would sure beat carrying around a laptop. Programming isn't a problem now that I've got the embedded VB working (a bit cheesy and old school but it works fine), haven't had a chance to make sure the MSComm control works, but there's no reason it shouldn't.

you can buy a charge adapter from dell for around $10 and solder a serial connector to the correct pins (not sure what they are). It won't be normal voltage though.

I'll do some checking into that. Voltage level translation won't be a problem, just as long as i can get to the right pins at a decent price.

Thanks for the info.

Let me know if this works as I was also looking for a cheap RS232 to provision some optical muxes with my X50v.

How about this one? It´s a little cheaper, just $49.95
http://www.yourmobiledesk.com/produc...00 3&mfrID=na
Unfortunately it also says: "Please note: This item is currently on back order. Expected availability: 1/17/05", but time flies, you know...
The card connects to the bottom of the device, not via a CF card, not sure if thar makes any difference?
I´m myself looking for a serial connector for my Axim x5, I might try this one:

Good luck!

Question: Assuming that I succeeded in connecting my NMEA serial output from a depth finder to the serial port on my x50v (using one of the above mentioned adapters), how would I go about writing a very simple application to play sounds at certain frequencies depending on water depth? Is embedded VB the best tool for this?

Probably... evb has a comm control and I think NMEA is pretty straight forward in terms of parsing.

Hey thanks, I was looking for something like this. I found a BlueTooth to serial adapter for about $75. When I tried to order though, they said they had discontinued it, but sent me a link to a new company. They wanted $275 for theirs and I said no thanks. I want to use it to connect to Cisco routers and switches.

Well, it gets even better:
This one i only $29.95 for my x5, $34.95 for x3/x30/x3i. $37.95 with a 3 feet cable. Unfortunately nothing for x50...
http://www.serialio.com/products/ada...rial_RS232.htm
These cables seem s to be a little simpler than the others, though. I think you can plug an extra charger right into the cables from yourmobiledesk.com, it seems some applications/gadgets might need the extra "juice".
But then again, 30 bucks? I´ll probably order one tonight...

How about using serial to USB cable, then connect USB to x50v's serial port? Will this work. Serial to USB cost about $15.

I'm definitely interested in the answer to this question...

Still looking for a way to plug my x50v into haicom 303mmf or any other GPS that does mouse mode.

I'd even start soldering that power connector that is supplied if I knew the pinouts and wouldnt risk shorting my axim somehow!

You can get the bluetooth slipper for the haicom 303mmf.. I have the haicom 303s with slipper and the bluetooth connection works great..

So...has anyone had success with a serial connection to a router/switch with the x50? I too wish to manage routers and switches without a laptop. What software are you using to tell the x50 to use the cable?
