Building a car charger for X50v, what power requirements?
Hey,
I'm gonna build a cigarette adapter car charger for my X50v and was wondering what power requirements it would need. My knowledge of electronics is rudimentary. It seems from what I've read the X50v takes 5v and about 500mA of current to run, is that right? Do I need to find a cigarette adapter that outputs exactly that much voltage and current, or is just a minimum output of one or the other sufficient? I don't want to damage the Axim with too much voltage or current.

Also, does anyone know what the size of the DC plug on the Axim is?

Thanks for your help.

Read the sticky at the top of the forum for power. 500ma probably is NOT enough.

Just curious, why are you building your own charger?

Basically I need a charger tomorrow for a long distance trip, so ebay would've taken too long. Went to the radioshack today and tried to pick up one of those multivoltage adaptaplug ones. Found one that supplied either 4.5 or 6V and 1.2A, which I figured would be more than enough. Found a plug that seemed to fit the Dell connector. Went to the car, no charge. Hmmm. Not sure if I had the wrong DC plug adapter size or what, though that one seemed to fit just fine. Didn't charge at either 4.5 or 6V. So I guess I'll be buying one from ebay after all. Also will pick up a Sync cable as well.

4.5 is too little voltage, it won't trigger the circuit. 6V is too much, it triggers the protective circuitry. 5 or 5.4 are the only acceptable voltages.

That makes sense. Have fun on your trip.

BTW, can you use a charger from an ipaq? They stock those at Comp USA and Best Buy. Those are 5 volts at 1-2 A.
